Question about San Diego Velodrome

Hi,

I'll be visiting San Diego and thought it would be fun to watch the Friday night races on August 14. Is there someone I can call to get more information or confirmation the event will be held? There's no phone number on the website.

Also, if someone here has been to a Friday night event at the SD velodrome, I'd like to know more about the viewer experience. I figure I can park in the lot nearby and walk in .... Are there any fees? Anything else my party should know?

Thanks in advance.

Heads-Up: Del Mar increasing bike enforcement at stop signs

Been a while since I’ve ridden the route so not sure when it went up…but Del Mar seems to be leaning into bicycle-focused enforcement.

Entering Del Mar on PCH northbound there’s an amber traffic sign warning cyclists that the city is committed to stop them from running stop signs. Also, sheriff parked at PCH and 11th observing the intersection. They were parked there while I was going both directions today, about an hour apart, around noon.

Why it irked me:

1.) Vehicle mass and speed are more closely related to traffic fatalities and severe injury…why is Del Mar focusing enforcement resources on bicycles ?

2.) Hasn’t The Idaho Stop proven to be safer ?

Question: finishing pacific coast bicycle tour in a few days; border field park accessibility

Where am I able to get to? And if I’m being picked up, where can cars get to in that area?

Travel report

Just back from trip abroad and while I was expecting solid bike infrastructure compared to here…I was still impressed.

Spain - protected bike lanes everywhere. Separate traffic signals dedicated to those bike paths. Drivers and pedestrians respecting the bike’s right of way, and vice versa. Bike infrastructure wasn’t an afterthought. People riding bikes were respected, not secondary, never honked at. And most impressive about all this, it was incorporated into cities that were never designed for it…so there’s really no excuse it can’t be done here.

Obviously they had their problems too (eggs were a bit more expensive…)

Anyone else, best other city (foreign or domestic)?

Revised budget “still proposes cutting the team of traffic safety engineers in the Transportation Department known as the “multimodal team” that is responsible for creating new, safer street designs.”

The ban will affect riders 12 and under who ride a class 1 or class 2 e-bike, which provides assistance up to 20mph. Many class 1 and 2 e-bikes designed for kids top out at lower speeds for safety. These aren’t the much more powerful e-motos.

Find your California Representative: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

Email or call and let them know that this bill will not solve the problem of kids riding emotos too fast. It is not addressing the problem and is inherently unfair to riders who need more than 250w to propel them down the road (anybody who can't afford a mid-drive and weighs more than 90lbs).

“More San Diegans die from fatal crashes every year than non-traffic related violent crimes. According to the Mayor, public safety is his Administration’s top priority. However, this budget cuts the entire team of engineers dedicated to making streets safer. Ultimately, San Diegans will suffer with their lives.”

Good point about public safety priorities, especially considering imbalance between law enforcement and safer streets budgets.
