Why do so many sequels launch straight into the action without catching the reader up on the previous book(s)?
I read a lot of series of books and have had to give up on many of them. When there's a lengthy gap between books in a series, I can rarely remember what's going on; I'll have read several books in between a book and its sequel, yet the author assumes we've just finished the previous book and throws us straight back in there.
Characters that I've loved in previous books are just names on a page at this point.
Just a little bit of exposition at the beginning or a recap folded into the story would be so bloody helpful. I can't go back and read every book just to catch up on the new one.
