How hot is too hot for an e-bike battery?

How hot is too hot for an e-bike battery?

Summer is coming up and I started digging into something I never paid much attention to before: e-bike battery heat.

A lot of us think about cold weather hurting range, but heat can be rough on batteries too. Most lithium batteries don't love sitting in extreme temperatures, especially inside cars or direct sun for long periods.

I'm curious:

Have any of you noticed your e-bike range dropping during really hot weather?

Or had a battery get surprisingly hot after a ride?

I put together a guide on what temperatures can become a problem and some simple ways to help protect battery life if anyone is interested.

Velotric GoMad Review: Compact Utility E-Bike for Cargo, Commuting & Passengers

Been looking at the new Velotric GoMad and finally finished putting together a full review. Honestly one of the more interesting utility e-bikes I’ve seen lately because it feels more compact and manageable than a lot of oversized cargo bikes while still having serious hauling capability.

The 500 lb payload, torque/cadence sensor switching, integrated turn signals, and fat tire setup definitely make it stand out for commuting, errands, and passenger riding.

I also like that Velotric focused on practical everyday features instead of just raw power numbers.

Curious what everyone here thinks about the newer compact utility e-bike trend compared to full long-tail cargo bikes.

Summer is honestly one of the best times to own an e-bike. ☀️

I just updated my Best Summer E-Bikes guide.

This time I focused more on:

  • comfort in hot weather
  • beach & campground riding
  • lightweight handling
  • folding bikes for RV travel
  • realistic battery range

What’s your favorite type of e-bike for summer riding?

Virginia Beach is debating e-bike access at the Oceanfront again, and a lot of riders are confused about what’s actually allowed right now. I broke down the current boardwalk restrictions, Atlantic Ave rules, sidewalk confusion, and what riders should know before heading to the beach this summer.

Just finished putting together a full review of the Kingbull Verve, and honestly this bike looks more interesting than I expected.

A lot of folding e-bikes can feel like compromise bikes with smaller batteries, basic brakes, or twitchy ride quality. The Verve seems to go the opposite direction with a 48V 20Ah Samsung battery, 750W rear hub motor, hydraulic brakes, torque sensor, and 20x4 fat tires.

What stood out most to me:

Huge battery for a folding bike

Torque sensor instead of the cadence sensor many budget folders use

Hydraulic brakes

High claimed payload capacity

More like a full utility bike that happens to fold

The biggest downside looks obvious: weight. It’s around 77 lbs, so this seems more like a fold-for-storage bike than something most people would want to carry upstairs often.

I also compared it to bikes like the Lectric XP4 Long Range and Aventon Sinch.2 since those are likely cross-shop options for many buyers.

If anyone here is researching folding e-bikes right now, I put together the full breakdown here: Kingbull Verve folding e-bike review with specs, range, pros and cons

Would you choose this over a Lectric XP4 or Sinch.2? Curious what people think.

I’m over 50 myself, and I recently put together a guide on something I think a lot of people wonder about but don’t always say out loud - what’s the best e-bike if you’re over 50 and haven’t ridden in years?

A lot of people want to get back into riding, but the real questions usually aren’t about speed or fancy specs. It’s more like, will I feel stable on it? Is it easy to get on and off? What if I’m nervous riding again? Will it help on hills or when the wind is brutal? Is it going to feel comfortable on my back or knees?

That’s really what I focused on when making the guide.

I looked at bikes that are easier to ride, step-through models, upright comfort bikes, smoother pedal assist bikes, and options that feel less intimidating if it’s been a long time since you’ve been on two wheels.

Some that stood out to me were the Lectric XPress Step-Thru, Aventon Pace 4, Velotric Discover 3, Lectric XP 4, and Specialized Turbo Como.

I also included tips for people who feel nervous about getting back on a bike, what features actually matter most after 50, and mistakes people sometimes make when buying their first e-bike after years away.

Honestly, being over 50 myself, I think comfort and confidence matter way more than trying to buy the fastest or flashiest bike.

I’d also love to hear from others over 50 - what bike helped you get back into riding?

Just finished putting together a full review of the Lectric XPedition 2.0 and honestly… it’s one of the more interesting cargo e-bikes I’ve looked at lately.

Big things that stood out:

  • really high payload (450 lbs)
  • optional dual battery setup for longer range
  • torque sensor makes it feel smoother than older budget cargo bikes

Seems to perform pretty well even under load too.

Not perfect though - the kickstand and overall size seem to be the most common complaints.

Curious if anyone here owns one - how has it been long term? Especially with kids or heavy loads.

I broke everything down here if you want to see the full review

I’ve been trying to figure this out and realized not all e-bikes handle hills the same, even if they both say 750W.

From what I’ve seen:

  • 500W hub.... struggles on steeper hills
  • 750W hub ... usually fine for most commutes
  • mid-drive ... noticeably better for longer or steep climbs

Also didn’t realize hills can cut your range a lot more than expected.

Curious what people here are riding for hilly commutes - does yours handle it well or struggle?
