Hello, I’ve been developing a Windows application called PopDict — a tool designed to help people understand Chinese and other languages directly from content on their screen.

PopDict currently includes two primary modes: Words Mode and Sentences Mode.

Words Mode is fully free, fully offline, and currently focused on Chinese. When you hover your mouse beneath a Chinese word, PopDict instantly displays a translation and breakdown for that individual word. The goal is to make reading and recognizing vocabulary significantly faster and less disruptive.

Sentences Mode is designed for larger or more complex text. You can snip a selected region of your screen, or your entire screen, and PopDict will detect the text, translate it, and provide a learning-oriented breakdown of the words and sentences. The feature also includes text-to-speech support. Sentences Mode supports many languages and can translate between many different languages. The mode includes a limited free tier, with unlimited usage available for $7.99/month.

The overall goal of PopDict is to make understanding foreign-language content faster, smoother, and more accessible while still helping users learn naturally through exposure and context. It works well with videos, websites, PDFs, games, subtitles, social media, and other on-screen content.

Both modes are designed to be very fast and easy to use. I’m continuing to improve the app and refine the experience over time.

There is a words mode and a sentences mode in the program. Words mode is fully free and offline, and currently only is compatible with Chinese, translating one word at a time when you place your mouse below a word.

In sentences mode, you snip a region of your screen, or your whole screen, and receive a translation of the detected words and sentences with a learning oriented breakdown and an option for TTS.
