Why is the adult entertainment industry largely inaccessible to retail investors?

I've been curious about this for a while. The adult entertainment industry is obviously a substantial, profitable market, yet there are virtually no publicly traded companies primarily focused on pornography that retail investors can easily buy into.

I know there are some structural reasons:

  • Most companies are privately held
  • Exchange listing standards likely screen these out
  • Broker policies and mutual fund restrictions probably play a role
  • Banking/payment processing challenges in the space

But I'm wondering: Is this purely regulatory/institutional gatekeeping? Are there fundamental business model issues that make these companies unsuitable for public markets? Or is it just a combination of stigma + risk factors that make it not worth the hassle for exchanges and brokers?

Curious to hear thoughts from folks who work in finance or investment. What am I missing?

Also open to hearing conspiracy theories.

How am I doing?

I started investing in May, so pretty much a month. I'm 33 years old.

I bought Mu just at its peak of ATH lol, so minor setback. My estimation is to join the club next year.
