My poor sweet boy had surgery yesterday!

Wylie had a growing lipoma on his left chest, right about where the belly strap of his service dog vest hit. We had it looked at in early summer last year, and the vet said to keep an eye on it. The skin started looking raw in the early spring this year, and we finally got it looked at again in mid-July; the vet said it was time to remove it because the skin was becoming ulcerated. 8/13 was the day, and he did great, apparently! He pretty much slept once he got home, but then in the evening he started to perk up. I’ve never experienced an animal having surgery, so this is a first for me! Anyway, please send prayers/good vibes/thoughts Wylie’s way.

My boy has been 7 for a whole week now!

Wylie turned 7 last Sunday! We got ice cream the day before, he got Peanut Butter Ripple and there was a huge ball of peanut butter in his scoop, so he was over the moon about that! He got a llama (with 3 different very loud squeakers) from the Chewy birthday shop, as well as a birthday volcano containing dinos wearing birthday hats. We also got the Bocce’s Bakery birthday treat pack, and we put the birthday cake ones inside the volcano for him to find. Llama is of course his favorite toy currently, so we’re playing with it a lot!
I can’t believe he’s 7 already, it feels like just yesterday that we were matched right after his 2nd birthday!

I FINALLY FINISHED THESE SOCKS

I posted before saying that I was starting to get back into knitting because I couldn’t stand the FOMO of not participating in Summer Sock Camp. Well, it took me something like 2mo to finish the 2nd sock of the pair (I had stopped about 5rnds before the heel flap when my hands stopped working), but they’re done! I’m hopefully going to be mailing them to their recipient at the beginning of next week.

I had a significant medical event that started in early July last year, and I lost the use of my hands in mid-August, despite keeping up with knitting. I’m disabled anyway, and unable to work or go to school, so knitting was what kept me sane and gave me purpose in life. Losing the ability to knit for the 2nd time in less than 5yrs was devastating. I tried in OT to knit again, but my body wasn’t ready. It took almost 10mo for my body to be ready, but I am so, so, so thankful and happy! These socks are more than that, they’re a symbol of comeback and healing!

I’M BACK TO KNITTING

I’m disabled, and knitting has been my main hobby since 2023, after I was able to pick it back up after a serious illness had me kind of paralyzed and I lost a lot of use of my hands. In July, I was hit with another incredibly disabling illness that we have yet to diagnose. Most of my body is very, very numb, and my nerve signals are all screwed up. I lost the ability to knit in August when the numbness moved into my hands, despite me fighting to retain the skill; it just became too hard. It’s been really difficult mentally since I wasn’t able to knit, but when Summer Sock Camp was announced as being back this year, I decided to try again. Since I got back to work on this sock I started last June, I’ve knit 32sts, or half a round. It’s a start, though! My goal is to finish this pair (pictured is the first sock) and another pair (that’s about 3/4 done). So happy to be trying to get back in the saddle!!

Dogs at play are the best! 🩵

This is my service dog Wylie. I’m disabled and this weather is killing me, but I managed to leave my bedroom and go out to the living room today, so a play session was a must! He’s my best boy, and I love seeing him so happy! I hope this video makes you smile.

Last week, I saw my regular psychiatric resident (who I LOVE, but he’s graduating in June and moving to California for his fellowship at Stanford), and the attending who came in is not one I have seen before. After taking care of a few details, she goes, “So what’re you thinking about college?” Now, I’m about to turn 30, and graduating from high school barely happened because I was starting to get sicker. I had plans to go to college and have a career, but the gap year I initially took turned into too sick/disabled to work or go to school, and I’ve had to work really hard to be even remotely OK with that. Anyway, I told this woman basically, yeah, no, college isn’t happening, I’m too disabled, plus I really hate school. I like learning, but not school. SHE PUSHED THE ISSUE, asking me if there’s any field I’d like to work in, should my situation change. I told her I wasn’t sure because I had been thinking that if I ever became healthy enough, I’d want to be a vet tech, but someone in that field recently told me she had to leave her job since bites and scratches are part of the occupation and she’s immunocompromised. This psychiatrist cheerfully told me to think about it because I could get better.

This has been eating at me since it happened, and I’m MAD! She doesn’t know me and just destroyed the very delicate balance I’d achieved after years of being disabled with her ignorance! I’m sorry, but I also don’t have the energy to devote to figuring out a career that likely will not happen.

My sister, upon hearing my recap of the conversation, said I should message her through the portal and tell her how much her words hurt. I think I’m probably going to do that.

And yeah, I know that there is a chance my chronic illnesses/disabilities could get better enough for me to live more normally, and I know that thinking positively is a good thing, but realism is also good. I’m not a pessimistic person in general, at least I don’t think I am. I’ve also been around long enough to know not to get my own hopes up and that I need to be mindful of where my energy is going. It’s a very hard balancing act, and I’m by no means perfect.

Anyway. Thank you for indulging my rant.
