Their main contention is that since the text only provides that it is the chief justice who must preside should the president be tried, the impeachment court must look to the ‘spirit’ of the law to determine if the motion to vote for another presiding officer is sound.

That’s why they brought up the framers’ debates because it was supposedly understood by the framers that the SP should also be the presiding officer in cases where it is not the president who gets tried.
