AITA for getting upset when my mom smiles while I cry
I want to be clear that I love my mom very very much, and she is a wonderful lady. she is always been there for me and I feel like this situation has only shown up within the last few years and I don’t know why it started.
I’m back in town visiting my mom- I was really upset about a situation and crying and I look up and she’s smiling. I’ve had this conversation with her multiple times, so I won’t go into it, but I expressed that her smiling while I cried, confused me. I got upset and said that pissed me off and she got upset that that made me upset. I ended up storming off and heading upstairs, not my finest moment. I immediately apologized to her, but was still insistent that I needed her to stop smiling when I cry.
so am I the asshole for getting angry when we’ve had this conversation before? She’s saying her smiling while I’m venting is her “being herself.” and it’s just what she does. but I don’t think smiling while your child is crying as a personality trait, or one’s way of expressing themselves?? I don’t wanna be an asshole, but it genuinely hurts my feelings.
I can’t tell if I’m being a jerk to my mom, because I don’t want to be. but every time it happens, it hurts my feelings and I tell her every time. but she forgets everytime. even though it’s not her intention, it feels very invalidating or like my crying is entertaining. Which logically I know isn’t true, and she’s told me, but I still feel angry when I see it.
I kind of feel like an asshole sitting here at night after our fight, but I also think it’s OK for me to not want somebody smiling like they’re watching a nice game of scrabble at me while I sob.
