I live in Arizona but purchased a vehicle in California. I drove the vehicle home the same day I purchased it. The California dealership placed a temporary plate on the vehicle that is valid until June 30. The dealership then proceeded to register the vehicle in California for another year despite knowing I live in Arizona and was leaving straight from the dealership back to Arizona. I have submitted a request for a registration refund with the California DMV based on the fact that I paid for the 1 year registration after purchasing the vehicle and because the vehicle left the state of California before the 1 year registration begins. I was told by the California DMV that it could take months for them to review and process my refund. Meanwhile, it’s looking like I will need to pay Arizona use tax on top of registration dues when I register the vehicle in Arizona. I am contemplating rocking the California plates for a year as opposed to registering the vehicle in Arizona right now and having to pay Arizona use tax on top of two registrations for the time being until California refunds me my money. I understand Arizona wants you to register your vehicle within 30 days if you live there but how are so many people driving in Arizona with California or foreign state plates? Another thing I think about is how those with expensive cars that register them in states like Montana are doing the same if there is supposedly a 30-day requirement to register your vehicle in Arizona?
