Picky Picky Caterpillar

Picky Picky Caterpillar

I work in landscaping and rescued this caterpillar off my coworker's pants during a break last week. It seems to be an eyed hawkmoth. We were working in a bioswale, cutting willows, so it made sense to me.

I've been trying to raise it, but it seems really picky about the willows that I feed it. Didn't like cuttings from the area it came from that much (Pacific[?] willow), really doesn't like weeping willow leaves from my tree in the yard, but seems really keen on Northwest willow, which is native around here but was absent where we were working.

All the resources online suggest they're fine with any willow or sallow or sometimes other things. It doesn't seem like it has parasites or diseases. So what gives.

I've been wondering whether it might prefer baby leaves over older leaves. Or if it is not what I ID'ed it as at all. I'm a scientist and lifelong naturalist, but I get things wrong sometimes.

For reference, the dominant plants in the bioswale it came from were: Pacific willow, red alder, various conifers (👎), wild rose, spirea, and lotsa lotsa blackberries. No poplars or other stuff that related species eat.

Help me out here. If I have to walk half a mile a day to get fresh Northwest Willow leaves I will. Don't tell me to just feed it with what I found it on, because that's my coworker. It might not even have come from where we were working. Also, I could just toss it outside somewhere but that's a death sentence anyway in most scenarios.

TL;DR: Looking for ID confirmation that this is an eyed hawkmoth and asking whether certain types and qualities of willow leaves are better than others. If not eyed hawkmoth, what should I be feeding it. Stat.

I Goofed; What Now?

My son is out of town for the month. I goofed and sent his refill through the mail. The package made it, but the Wellbutrin was either seized or stolen. I know I know I know. I should have done my research, but I really was acting out of naivete.

What I want to know is, how rough is it going to be for him if he runs out? I can't go to the post office about tracking them down because it's so illegal and they provide zero assistance. I could ask his doctor for a replacement prescription, which he could try to fill over there, but I'm not sure his doctor would cooperate and it might just get us in more trouble.

I say that because there was no note in the package. Usually the USPS leaves a note when they remove something prohibited. So I assume a worker took them, thinking they were snagging something fun. On the off chance that this was done under the radar, I don't want to draw attention to us.

I know it's a long shot, but do any of you have experience with this sort of situation? Should I lie to his doctor and say he misplaced them? Come clean and risk getting his dad and me in a heap of trouble? Or let him raw-dog it until he gets back? He's a minor, and I have a duty to take care of him.

Thanks for any advice. Laugh at me all you want. I'm dumb. I just really don't know what to do atp or who to ask for guidance besides strangers on the internet.

Vacation Rental Management Companies?

Hi! I used to clean for a vacation rental management company in a different state and enjoyed it. I tried Googling similar companies here, but all I got were vacation rental companies or property management (aka landlord) companies, but no vacation rental management companies.

I got my last cleaning job through word-of-mouth, so perhaps that is the way to go. Do you know of any locally-owned management companies that clean vacation rentals? Just looking for leads. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am happy to have a calm, informed conversation with anyone about the vacation rental industry. My feelings are mixed and I'm always open to learning and growing if you are too. I just know how strongly some want to vent their spleen when they hear "vacation rental."
