PS2 (SCPH-39001) displaying 'disc read error' with DVDs and audio skipping with CDs..
I've got a fat PS2 (SCPH-39001) that went into storage in perfect working condition around 15yrs ago and came out this week, only to be completely dead. I swapped the PSU and got it working, however, it's not reading discs. I opened up the drive, which was surprisingly clean, re-lubed the '3' rails with silicone grease and cleaned the laser lens. None of these things resolved the issue, so I tried changing the COG wheel adjustment, but it didn't resolve the issue (I left it around 9-10 o'clock). Next I used a multimeter on the pots and slowly adjusted both of them down to around 800 ohms each. When I put in a PS2 game, it detects a 'PlayStation 2 DISC' (image below) but then when I hit X, it spins for a few seconds and then displays 'Unable to read disc' (image below). If I try inserting an audio CD, it sees the tracks and will begin to play them, however, the audio randomly skips and plays various artifacts. Considering that the console was perfectly fine before it went into storage, I would assume that the laser would still be OK, but I'm guessing it's not that simple? It's a KHS-400C laser, so I'm considering just buying one of the refurbished ones off eBay that comes with a 1yr warranty and then mirroring the little black set screw height on it to match my original one. I'll also measure the ohms to make sure the pots aren't cranked on the replacement. My factory ohm measurements were surprisingly high, which I pretty much halved during testing. Not really sure what else to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
