California Building Code, Kitchens and no barrier between Stove and Living area

California Building Code, Kitchens and no barrier between Stove and Living area

Hoping someone can enlighten me as to why Building Code, Fire Code, etc., permit what looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Gas stove with minimal barrier to prevent furniture placement

In the photo, there is a gas range placed at the end of a kitchen counter. For the sake of argument, the fuel source could be electric and it would make no difference: a fire on the stove top could quickly spread to the adjacent furniture. There is a minimal barrier present between the range and sofa but it appears to be constructed from combustible materials.

I can't find anything in the California Building Code that would disallow this layout. It's astounding to really. All permits for this renovation were filed, approved, and work finaled in mid to late 2020.

I'm going to guess this type of layout is permissible across the USA. I would prefer to see a proper wall from floor to ceiling with minimum 1/2" gypsum.

Interested to know if this is permissible construction elsewhere in the world.

PiKVM v4 Plus display choice (why OLED?)

I just started using both a PiKVM v4 Plus and a PiKVM switch. Nice kit. I've deployed enterprise hardware previously in data centers for context.

I'm a bit baffled as to why OLED was chosen for the display. We all know what the problems are with this technology as related to static content and burn in despite all of the advances. I would have chosen backlit LCD probably but...

Why isn't there just a momentary button on the device or at least a toggle in the Web user interface that will easily let you toggle the display on/off? Even for a backlit LCD I would have had the backlight turn off after idle seconds and a momentary button to trigger the backlight back on.

I just don't see any purpose in the display having illumination all of the time. In my new home setup, for instance, my PiKVM is stuffed in a closet in a rack which I don't really need to visit all that often: no need for an always on display at any level of dimness if it means no matter what the display will just degrade.

As for now, I'll just turn the display off from the cli (because I know someone will reply with "Why don't you turn it off from the command line? Missing the entire point.").

No outdoor PTZ camera?

Anyone know why ADC doesn't offer any PTZ cameras, at least not for consumer? I just temporarily installed a Reolink PTZ from my last house for my backyard until I pull some ethernet to that corner. In the meantime, this does let me use one camera to view the side yard, back yard, back porch, and into (maybe more importantly) the vacant lot next door. Although the end goal is to train a camera across the rear porch windows and sliding door, I do like the flexibility of being able to remotely move the camera around, etc.

Seems like a weird omission in the ADC lineup to not offer a single PTZ camera.
