Was I wrong for taking this amplification?
I had a kind of weird experience with a new-to-me coach today and I'm wondering if I was in the wrong. Because of the holiday, I'm sure a lot of us had sub coaches at our various studios. I took class from one who doesn't normally teach at my home studio.
Prefacing this to say that I have a healed collarbone injury that my regular coaches know about because I was taking from them when it happened. It is 100% better now, save for minor occasional soreness, but I've found that there are a few amps that actually work better for me these days.
Today's opened class with a grey side plank crunch. Hands on the platform bar and toes is one "amplification" that I've actually found lends itself best to me on this side post-injury, at least for a few reps and then I'll typically drop to knees. As soon as I was there, the coach said something over the mic about "giving our bodies time to warm up" and repeated the options of elbows and toes or elbows and knees multiple times... Until I dropped down to my knees myself.
For me, this is a warm-up as it keeps my chest more open and reduces tension on my right clavicle, where my injury was. As it's not an active injury and I know how to modify, I haven't been saying anything about it to coaches I don't know well, but should I be? I didn't want her to think I was ignoring her instruction but I was doing what felt right for my body today. 🤷 My regular coach always emphasizes that amps are just options and you should "try one on" to see what fits you best, so I was a bit surprised to feel criticized over taking this one.
