My 10yo son and I started making our own game!

He's seen me tinkering with some game design ideas for a while now and he wanted to try his hand at it! He loves the look of Root, so he started thinking up a game with battling forest factions. We decided to make the main focus a capture-the-flag game.

You need to get to another faction's base, collect their flag, and make it back to your base. Each animal faction has a semi-unique deck of cards. On your turn you draw a card and must perform two actions from the following: draw a card, play a card, attack, or regroup. Each card can be played for its power or can be used for its attack/defense value.

We just played our first game tonight and it was a blast! Lots of raucous moments and tons of laughter! Can't wait to refine it and keep making memories with him.

Variety is the spice of life

This is my third sale, so I figured I'd show everything I've gotten in those sales! New this time are the top 5 (and still waiting on The Last Waltz, which they forgot to pack).

The first movie I plan to watch from my latest haul is Thief. I really love Michael Mann's other work, so I'm curious to see where it all started.

I have always wanted to own The Princess Bride and Night of the Living Dead, and I couldn't pass up these 4K versions!

Looking at my collection as a whole, surprisingly, most of them have been blind buys! The only ones that I had seen previously were The Princess Bride, Night of the Living Dead, The Tree of Life, and No Country for Old Men. All others were based on recommendations from friends or online communities.

My favorite blind buys have been Sorcerer and In the Mood for Love. Both surprised me (in different ways) and were such a treat! I still have not seen The Leopard or Seven Samurai, but I'm excited to check them out.

I would really love to add the last couple Malick's I'm missing, Do the Right Thing, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. And it would be great to have all the box sets I want...

Lastly, I would love to have Terrance Malick's A Hidden Life be in The Criterion Collection. It is a wonderful mix of his past and "current" styles and such a beautifully told story.

Based off everything you've seen and read, what would you say I should add to my list? Are there specific filmmakers you think I'd like? What are your favorites from my haul(s)?

[COMC] Curating a Variety of Experiences

I started playing modern board games around 2008 with games like Catan, Carcassonne, Arkham Horror, and Magic The Gathering. I started my own collection around that same time, but I was mostly playing Magic.

I moved to a new city in 2012 and the Magic scene was not as welcoming as I was used to. I decided to sell off my Magic collection and put that into a board game collection instead. It felt easier to convince people to play board games rather than convincing them to play Magic!

Over the years I started a monthly game group and it's been really fun to watch it grow as we introduce new people into the hobby! We usually get 8-15 people each month. Here are some of my favorites that I don't own, but my friends have in their collections:

  • Ark Nova
  • Galactic Cruise
  • Luthier
  • Ra
  • Ezra and Nehemiah

Favorites of my own:

  • Andromeda's Edge
  • Dune Imperium: Uprising
  • SETI
  • Kanban EV
  • Dead Reckoning
  • Clank Catacombs
  • Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I've decided that this is the only space I will have for games. So, if I want a new one, I need to make some room on the shelves. One-in-one-out! It is helpful to me so I don't ever go overboard with too many games. This feels like the perfect amount for me where I can get them all played and don't feel like I'm just hoarding things. The next game I need to make room for is Speakeasy! I am very eager to try it out!

I really enjoy curating my collection to have a game for as many situations as possible. Different mechanisms, player counts, lengths, etc. I really value the diversity in different types of experiences. Do you see anything missing in terms of mechanics, player count, types of games etc?

I'd love to hear any suggestions or recommendations you may have based on what I already enjoy!
