C4D for Houdini users

Hey all, I’m looking for some advice as most info out there seems to be for C4D -> Houdini and not the other way around.

I’m a former comper-turned-generalist that has been mainly using Houdini at work for the past 2-3 years. I love every thing about Houdini and the workflow, but did the trial C4D recently and decided to give it a go for a year, mainly to just play around in. There’s certainly a gap in Houdini in terms of layout, product animation, and non-procedural modeling that I’d like to fill, so I’m interested in exploring workflows for that, especially with working in combination with Houdini.

I’ve messed around in Blender enough and it’s never felt great to me to use (over-reliance on community tools, a bit too disjointed and seems undercooked in standard workflows for professional live-action VFX), but C4D felt much better immediately. I learned 3D through Houdini, so I’m struggling a bit with adapting to how most DCCs do things like modifiers/deformers/simple sims/etc.

Does anyone have any insight or suggestions for learning material? I’ve found it tricky to find tutorials that teach C4D workflows without being retaught the basics of 3D itself. Note: I’ve used Redshift in Houdini for a few years, so materials & rendering in C4D has felt familiar to me so far.

Also any workflow insight or tooling suggestions for using C4D in combination with Houdini would be very appreciated! Blender has a plugin called Blendini that lets you easily push models/attributes/setups to and from Houdini, as well as true mtlx support, which is essentially what I’m hoping to find. Thanks in advance!

Head Bonk & a cheesed fs crook

This clip is from late 2022. I came across a post of some dude on r/oldskaters hitting his head on a ledge 50-50 and saying it wasn’t a problem… and it just struck a nerve. This shit SUCKS and is not worth it. It’s odd but I’ve only fallen on small obstacles like this and even still it’s def caused some permanent issues. I skated for nearly a decade before it happened the first time, and then it just kept happening (both with & without a helmet).

Do whatever you want obv. Just pissed me off how that dude posted himself hitting his head and got mad in response to the helmet comments. I still skate without a helmet if I’m doing low risk stuff. Just wanted to share as a warning and also bc the fall is cartoonish as hell
