Did your Nparents ever forbid you from using stuff that keeps you cool during heatwaves? For example fans, ice lollies (popsicles), and even refreshing drinks of water. My friend’s (29F) Nmom would never allow her to use a fan because they “wasted electricity”, yet her Nmom would have to be under (or next) to a fan at all times during these heatwaves. We’re in the UK. Most houses here don’t even have air conditioning, so fans are the thing that most people use here. Our houses are designed to keep heat in, so heatwaves here are torture. Even 30°C can feel much hotter. Another thing that her Nmom used to do is that she would buy multiple packs of ice lollies, so that she and enabler friends could enjoy them. If my friend even had one, she would’ve been punished for it (her Nmom thought you were never too old to be punished by your parents). Her Nmom passed away back in August 2025. Prior to her death, she lived alone because her daughter moved out in 2023. Even though her Nmom died, she still feels like she needs to ask for permission to use a fan, or have an ice lolly. She’s been going to therapy, but it’s been very difficult for her to stop asking others for permission to do things.
