Going to bars alone

33 y/o male here. I've been thinking of trying this. In the past, if anyone had asked me if I'd be willing to do this, I'd be like "no thanks, sounds awkward af". Recently, though, I though, "why not, if it doesn't go well, no harm done".

Has anyone ever had any luck getting dates this way? If so, do you have any advice?

Am I broken, or is there something wrong with me?

It has been almost thee and a half years since my last relationship ended. It did not end smoothly: the last few months, I feel like I was walking on eggshells trying to stay in my now-ex's good graces, and when I finally did break up, they basically exploded and hurled all these personal attacks at me (I later found out that they have BPD).

Since then, I have been on a handful of dates with people I matched with on Hinge, but they went nowhere. I've mingled with a few at bars and exchanged numbers with, but they all ghosted me. After that, I've had a hard time getting excited about dating. My MO since then has basically been "if I meet someone I want to ask out, great, but until then, I'm content doing my own thing."

So that leads me to the title of the post. Based on what you've read, am I broken? Is there something wrong with me? Or is this just a case of me being burned out by modern dating?

Sputnik Sweetheart Ending

I just finished my reread of this book, and this is my take on the ending. Many speculate that K commits suicide due to the final stanza:

"I spread my fingers apart and stare at the palms of both hands, looking for bloodstains. There aren't any. No scent of blood, no stiffness. The blood must have already, in its own silent way, seeped inside."

I think that people interpret this too literally. One of the major themes of this book is sacrifice, as evidenced by this quote from Chapter 1:

"Writing novels is much the same. You gather up bones and make your gate, but no matter how wonderful the gate might be, that alone doesn't make it a living, breathing novel. A story is not something of this world. A real story requires a kind of magical baptism to link the world on this side with the world on the other side."

The sacrifice K makes comes after he gets back from Greece. After Carrot is arrested for shoplifting, he senses that Carrot knows about what's going on between K and the mom, causing him to act out. Not wanting to cause any more pain, he makes the decision to end things with the mom, sacrificing his own short-term happiness for the long-term happiness of Carrot and his family.

In addition, we see K throw away the key to the storage unit that Carrot had swiped. My interpretation of this is to symbolize K being at peace with knowing he will probably never get closure on what happened to Sumire.

Based on all this, if K were to kill himself, it would make this sacrifice and his attempt to move on pointless.

As for the final phone call, when Sumire talks about all the trouble she went through to "get back": is K had crossed over to the other side by means of suicide, there would be no need for her to get back. I'm split on whether or not it happened in reality. Perhaps it's a lucid dream since they're often a reflection of the subconscious.

Of course, I could be totally off. What are your thoughts?

Should I reach out to my old crush?

A few nights ago, a had a dream where I was intimate with my old crush. For context, we worked together for about five months (this was about seven years ago). We always got along really well, but I never had the nerve to ask her out. Since this dream happened, I've been wondering if this is a sign I should take the plunge and message her and try to reconnect. She may not even remember me, and she may not even live in my area anymore, but I suppose the worst that can happen is that she'll politely say no thanks.

Hard Boiled Film Adaptation: Yea or Nay?

Do you think a film adaptation of Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World could work? If so, would it be better live-action or animated? Who would you like to see direct it? Any actors you could see in it?
