practicing color and facial structures. Tips?

I’ve been practicing painting without a reference, to be able to understand how lights and colors work on organic things like humans, animals but
I’m really struggling with his eyes and eyebrows/forhead so I was wondering if you had any tips!
I’d like to give him an angry/sad look and strong features but yeah it always seems flat when I try to
