Plant ideas for shade, zone 5 (preferably flowering)

I am planning a deck project and the deck would have to be set 4 feet back from my side fence according to my city bylaws. This creates an awkward 12’ by 4’ gap between my fence and my proposed deck (which would be against the house), almost like a little alleyway. To fill this space, I’m thinking of putting in large plant boxes (three boxes 4’x4’ and approximately 4’ tall)

The issue is that these planters would be heavily shaded because of the shade from the fence, the house, and a future gazebo.

I’m looking for ideas for plants that would do well with this limited lighting (in zone 5) before I go ahead with the deck build and this solution for the gap. Preferably flowering for some colour, but not necessary. Would also accept suggestions for annuals if you know of any that would work. Thanks !

Open incision after dog ripped out his stitches

My dog (10 yrs old, neutered male, approx 70lbs) had a lumpectomy on Monday (five days ago) that had only one stitch in it and a small incision. After about three days he started licking at it and the vet said to put polysporin on it and cover it so he could not get at it. I had made a makeshift bandage that wrapped around his waist, with the polysporin over the incision and gauze over it, which seemed to be holding fine.

Today I was out of the house for nearly seven hours and when I came home, the bandage was off, and he has ripped out his stitches. It doesn’t appear that he ate any of the gauze or bandage so this is not a concern. However the incision site is now open and has what appears to be a bit of pus inside. I don’t think he bled significantly when ripping out the stitches because there isn’t blood on anything in the home, whatever he had bled he must have licked up.

The vets office was closed at this point as it was after business hours and they are now closed until Monday. I got a surgical onesie and once again put polysporin on the incision site with gauze pad, so he won’t be able to get to it and hopefully will prevent infection.

I’m wondering if this can wait until Monday if I keep it covered with polysporin and the onesie, or should this be stitched back up sooner? Will it be able to heal properly if it isn’t stitched up quickly enough?

Any ideas why clear glaze is doing this to my pieces?

I used Pottery Supply House clear gloss glaze, with PSH White clay. The glaze is a dip glaze, I stirred well, put the tile face down in the glaze for 1-2 seconds, wiped the edges of the tiles in case of dripping. I did test tiles and this did not happen. When firing my actual tiles, I had this chalky look happen on 13 of 15 tiles.

Fired in a community kiln at cone 5.

Also, anything that can be done to fix this or should I remake the tiles?

Car dealership lost my contract, what is the risk here?

I recently bought vehicle and signed a 3 year financing contract, and two days after purchasing, the finance manager contacted me to ask me for my copy of the contract as she had lost hers. At this moment I realized in all the paperwork she gave me, she didn’t give me a copy of the contract. I know I signed it because I had questions about it.

The contract includes personal information such as full name, DOB, home address, phone number, drivers licence number, and VIN for my new vehicle.

What is the risk to me from this information being somehow lost at their dealership and possibly ending up in the wrong hands? Any advice on next steps?

Can this tree be saved?

My tree was struck by lightning today and split down the middle. It’s a silver maple (I’ve since learned about the troubles of silver maples but hey, the tree was free and isn’t near the house). I’m wondering if I could prune the tree if it would recover, or if it would be better to take it down and plant something else in its place (based purely on a tree health perspective)? I planted it as a sapling only four years ago

How long after removing invasive trees can I plant new native ones?

I have Manitoba maples in my backyard that are invasive in my region. I’m removing them this spring and would like to put native species in their place.

How long after cutting down the invasive and applying stump killing solution can I plant the new trees to make sure they won’t be affected by the allelopathic roots of the invasive trees?
