First Fig…Ever!

I know, I know. But I’ve been talking about planting a fig tree for years and did so this year. Well, only one was ready today. It was AWESOME. Kids love them so hoping some of the figlets grow and ripen here in Northern NJ.

So, was I a day or two late due to the bottom hole? Still tasted amazing, and everyone agreed the Italian honey fig was a great variety to plant. Hopefully l, we can keep it alive over the winter!

Will They Make It?

In the last two weeks figs have started to really emerge here for me jn Northern New Jersey. I had a few originally and didn’t see much size growth. But lately a couple of them have finally started to get bigger and a ton of little ones have emerged. Will the larger ones be ready for harvest by the end of the season? I’m assuming the little ones will not have enough time?

Edit: they are Italian honey figs.

Expected Rates for HEL?

Hi all!

My wife and I are set to build an addition in NJ. Here’s our basic details:

Income 375k combined
Debt $345k for single family house; mortgage is 2.85%/3300 month; available equity likely over 500k
No other debt whatsoever including cc, college loans, or car loans.
More than 6months of savings in bank
Excellent credit - 830 for me (took a dip this month when I put 25k on cc for Italian citizenship fees, but promptly paid back); 800 for wife

Project will be about 350k in cost.

Anything else you’d need to know to give a semi-accurate idea? Thank you!

Lake Bracciano and Orsini-Odescalchi Castle - The Perfect Getaway

We brought our boys for a long week in Rome and needed to give them, and us, a break from Rome. A couple of trains later and we were at Lake Bracciano and the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle.

We spent time exploring the castle but did not do the self-guided tour since we had some grouchy kids until the granola bars kicked in lol. Once they did, we all could not believe the grounds and views. It was incredible, to say the least. After about an hour or so, we stopped for some delicious pizza slices and five bottles of water (we were parched!) for 15 euros.

We then made our way to the beach downhill and rented two chairs an umbrella for another 15 euros. The water was crystal clear and beautifully crisp. After a few hours of playing and relaxation, we headed back up with a taxi, or so we thought.

The only thing that we miscalculated was there might be transportation back up when we needed it. We had to catch a 6:09 train and it was 5:40. It was clear that we needed to run uphill. We made it with about 30 seconds to spare after a wrong turn brought us to a park without an uscita lol. My advice - give yourself plenty of time to walk back up if you don’t have a car. The walk is neither easy nor leisure if you are pressed for time.

Regardless, it was an incredible break from busy Rome and I hope others make the trek.

Need Help Please

I called Verizon the other day and set up my cell phone to be ready for Italy when I landed. They told me that I needed to shut down my phone and reboot and turn on roaming. I’ve done that and it does not work. I’ve turned off roaming and that doesn’t work. I’ve tried to reboot the phone several times without success. Any idea what I should do? My wife is having the same issue on her phone.

Edit: when I called I set up our plans to include international capabilities (upgraded plan for ten days).

Roma Trip with Itinerary

We are traveling to Rome in July. I know it is hot/crowded, but with school, baseball, and our personal vacation schedules, this is the time we can manage. My boys are twin 8-year-olds, so we are trying to make it fun, but they do love history and are excited for the trip!

I know I can cram more in, but I hate rushing and I want to see more of the actual life of Rome without the hustle and bustle. I have booked nearly everything but can adjust if you believe there is a major error or something I'm missing.

Day 1

  • 730 arrival
  • Exploration Day, mostly unplanned unless we plan something to be awake for
  • Will need to store luggage near apartment until check-in
  • Spanish Steps?
  • Capuchin Crypts is being considered to keep the boys awake and get us all excited for the history of things!

Day 2

  • Tour in the morning - Immersive Underground Piazza Tour, Trvie Fountain, etc.
  • Afternoon free

Day 3

  • Pompeii early morning trains for tour in AM
  • Afternoon will be back in Naples, may try and grab dinner and walk around a bit before heading back to Rome

Day 4

  • Colosseum Tour in AM
  • Afternoon free

Day 5

  • Possible Lake Bracciano
    • Haven't fully planned this, but boys are very excited to swim in an Italian lake
    • Blue flag beach has me excited
      • Anything special to consider here?
      • Is there a hard walk from train to the beach? Which town should we visit to eat, Trevignano Romano? This is the one area where I could use advice :)

Day 6

  • Vatican/Sistine Chapel Tour
  • Afternoon free

Day 7

  • Food tour AM
  • Afternoon free

Day 8

  • Head home

[Northern NJ/NYC metro] Animal Scat ID?

This was outside of our garden. I’ve lived here ten years, but haven’t seen this scat before. Constipated deer?

Look ok? Leaves discolored a bit.

I thought it was doing pretty well, but this discoloration on some of the leaves gives me a bit of concern. Anything to worry about? I’ve been watering it regularly since being planted a month ago. It’s an Italian honey fig.

Thinning Peach Tree - Pulled Too Early?

I was convinced to thin the tree, but did I do it too early? Took off a lot of an overgrown tree (about 3/4x as much as shown here), so I guess we will see but I’m not feeling great after see the size of what I’ve done vs what others have done on this sub.

My Italian Grandmother Never Naturalized

As the title suggests, my brothers and I have ascertained that it’s very likely that my grandmother, born in 1898, never naturalized when she followed my grandfather to the US. Thus, it appears we are eligible for Italian citizenship. Is this correct? Even if my father is a US-born citizen. If so, where do I start?

Since I am in the US, do I need to prove that she never naturalized? Would that mean I need to file for a citizen of nonexistence (CONE)? USCIS? Quite honestly, we are thinking of hiring a lawyer to navigate this process. It feels that despite the cost, it may be worth it. Thoughts?

Thanks so much!
