Does your Sierra get warm when charging?

My previous EV experience is with a Model 3 and a Model Y. When you were charging those, you generally couldn’t tell. They are silent unless you just got done driving in the Texas summer and instantly plugged it. Then a fan may come on during the charging.

With my Sierra, it will kick on a fairly loud fan when I’m charging in my garage overnight. The truck isn’t warm when I start charging, but throughout the night it will get warm and warm the area around it. I’m charging at 9.6kW so not even the max power.

Voxel Bento box doesn’t seem to do much. It hasn’t cut down the ASA fumes at all

Finally got around to testing out airflow on the bento box. Or should I say lack of airflow.

Currently have a 120mm fan on order to pair with a community mod. Hopefully that will actually move air.

After trying to force my vehicle to recalibrate battery capacity, it just did it itself.

My truck was a courtesy vehicle with 4500 miles on it before I leased it. My capacity screen said 100% last calibrated X miles ago which correlated to the mileage on the odometer. On my Model 3 you had to drain to around 10%, then charge to 100% so I figured the Sierra was similar to that. I travel back and forth between CO and TX usually when I arrive, it's at 10%, so I let it set for a while and then charge to 100%. This last trip back, I arrived at 10% as normal, but my wife had the charge cable connected to her car, so I decided to wait until the next day. I decided to charge to 80% instead of messing with trying to calibrate. Then later when I got in the truck to go somewhere I noticed the battery calibration screen said "0 miles ago"...still at 100% though which I kind of feel dubious of.

so TL;DR - The truck will recalibrate when it feels like, or it may be sitting at 10% for 10-ish hours did the trick.

Finally picked up a 2nd CPAP.

I've been trucking my CPAP back and forth with me when I travel between Texas and CO. I've been wanting to get a 2nd Airsense 10 for ages but considering I got mine a few years back when they were fire selling the Card to Cloud machines for $299, it just kills me to pay $499 for extra functionality that I'll never use. I found one on Craigslist that had been listed since mid April. When I messaged they messaged back quick, not very common for Craigslist. The woman said, she tried it, couldn't stand it and had no use for it so she'd rather have $100. I plugged it in on site, and true to her word, it had an entire 16 hours on it. One less thing I need to worry about now.

I take my Corgs with me most everywhere I go, including the RC flight club. I have to keep them inside the truck there otherwise they start chasing planes down the runway. One of my coworkers captioned this photo "Get in loser, we're going for pup cups!". That fits Larry's personality perfectly.

It doesn't get much better than this, mountains, Larry & Potato, and RC planes.

Observations a month in with my Extended Range

For background, I've been driving a Model 3 since 2018. Never had an issue with the car and loved it generally. Just won't buy another Tesla until they dump the current CEO. I drove a Sierra 1500 to the Tesla store to trade in on my Model 3 so this definitely isn't my first truck...it's actually my 3rd.

With that said, there is definitely an adjustment going from something small like the Model 3 to something large like the Sierra.

Pros:

  • Vents that don't require multiple taps to adjust
  • Amazing range.
  • So much storage, front and back
  • So much leg room in the back
  • I can see traffic ahead of me so much better
  • Physical buttons for stuff you access often.
  • Such a quiet cabin compared to my Model 3
  • I have an actual spare tire! Unheard of nowadays
  • The range display is way more accurate than my Tesla ever was. There's a reason most Tesla drivers just display percentage instead of range.
  • It runs android and has an App Store to allow you to install the apps you prefer.

Things I wish were better:

  • Even in sport mode, steering seems soft.
  • I'm a data nerd and the amount of information about charge statistics, usage statistics, etc is not on par with what's available from my Tesla.
  • The base software is not up to par with Tesla either. The Apple Music client stops randomly. A Better Route Planner is disabled because it says I need to prioritize it, but never gives me an option to do that.
  • When home charging inside a garage, this truck generates a lot of heat. Something I've never dealt with before.
  • Even though it geofences the garage door openers, why not give us the option to automatically open them like my Tesla does.
  • I have the base stereo and it's just meh.
  • You can leave the truck "running", but I really wish it had a dedicated dog mode.
  • Still no phone key. I really hate carrying around a key fob, especially one this size.
  • The charging network integration in the app is not great. It's a task to figure out when to start charging sessions from the GMC app or the network app. It's also a task to figure out when you should get a membership to whichever networks.
  • The onboard routing doesn't have a way to say "don't use this charger again" when you encounter a crap one.

* there is a thing called a passenger and it knows when they aren’t wearing a seat belt so why can’t they operate the nav/radio/streaming while I’m driving?

Things I should have considered more:

  • Highway speeds affect less aerodynamic vehicles a lot.
  • This is a heavy truck and you have be cognizant of where you're parking it. This truck is right at the high end of lbs/square ft of a standard concrete foundation.
  • I'm leasing my truck so I didn't want to spend a lot on my tonneau cover. I didn't realize how loud that flapping would be inside a cab that is generally so quiet.

When I was originally looking for a vehicle to replace aging Model 3, I was relying on ABetterRoutePlanner's vehicle comparison tool that displays the times that a trip will take in different EVs since this was the main use of my EV. Because of the charging speed and battery size, the Sierra EV (Extended range) was one of the vehicles rated the least amount of time. In reality, that didn't pan out. Looking back, the Lyriq (my other choice) probably isn't as slow as they showed it to be. ABRP assumes that a 325kW Tesla charger will deliver a 300kW peak speed to my truck. I've got a 2 year lease on this truck and I do love having and driving a truck, but given my use cases, I probably should have picked a more efficient vehicle. No fault of the truck, just my excitement of having a truck again.

The Lectron and the GMC adapters look identical, but there is a weight difference between the two so I'm guessing they are not just rebadged from the same manufacturer.

I want to add a Stenner chlorine pump to my system

I've had my inground pool since 2018. I had an above ground pool before that. Since I had battled the chlorine wars with the above ground, I told the installer that I wanted the most care free pool. I stayed with chlorine pucks, added a mineral cartridge, and a UV lamp. A few years back, I had a hard freeze and the power went out. All my equipment had drain plugs except for my UV lamp so it busted. I never replaced it because it didn't really seem to do anything. I quit chlorine pucks several years back and have been adding liquid chlorine nightly. I want to add a tank and a Stenner pump to automatically add the chlorine.

When the UV lamp busted, I just capped off the electrical connections. I'm wondering if I can repurpose that connection to run the pump a set amount of time. The UV lamp was set up to come on when the pump was on. How can I check if that's a programming thing or if it's hardwired? If hardwired, is there a fairly simple way to accomplish this? The other option is to have is to repurpose the auxiliary pump for the cleaner. I use a Dolphin robot now since it works much better than the pressure side cleaner ever did.

To say that I'm underwhelmed by Tesla chargers with this truck would be a massive understatement.

Traveling back from CO Springs to the DFW area yesterday, I was looking forward to a fairly quick trip compared to going up a few weeks back. Boy, was I wrong. I used both ABRP and the onboard planner to map out my route. Just 2 stops! Awesome! Both said, 17 minutes for the first stop at a 325kW Tesla charger in Amarillo and a 33 minute charge in Vernon. Also very awesome!

Reality is a much different beast though. It was perfect weather, 70's to 90's and the battery pre-heating wasn't really needed, but it kicked on both times automatically. I arrived at both stations within a few percentage points of what was predicted. The charging throughput completely stunk. Peak charge rate for both of these was around 135 to 140, but that only lasted until just before I hit 20%, then it dropped pretty precipitously down to 100kW. I don't think it's the Tesla charger doing it because the truck indicated it was only asking for a little more than the charger was providing. The 17 minute charge turned into 46. The 33 minute charge turned into 1 hour and 3 minutes.

The only good part of the trip was that I met 2 guys driving a Hummer and we were able to commiserate about the slow charging rates at the stops.

Third screen shot is from an EA charger showing that my truck with an extended range battery, is fully able to get around 300kW peak.

I am thankful that the Tesla network is open to us because there are some areas of that drive where 100kW is still the best you're going to find.

My adult daughter brought home one heck of an infection from her classroom. I ended up getting it a few days later. It's been three weeks now and I'm finally feeling in the clear. This was even with a steroid and antibiotic. Constantly blowing my nose and and a dry hacking cough throughout the day. Completely miserable.

But at night it wasn't half bad. The only setting I changed was to max out the humidity on my Airsense 10. It's amazing to me at how well my cpap will keep my nose open through the night. By morning I could have a little bit of time with a productive cough. I can't imagine what this would have been like without a cpap. Well, actually, I kind of know because my daughter did not get a good nights sleep for about 2 weeks.

Was looking for a new EV to replace my higher mileage Tesla. Hadn't even considered an EV truck because of the outrageous MSRP on them. Found one that was a courtesy vehicle and between dealer discounts and a GM discount, I got it for over 20k off. This was my first time taking it out to the field. Was great to not even have to charge up batteries before I went. I just plugged into the back of the truck and charged at the field.
