If something like Oct 7th had happened in Britain, France, The U.S., or even Spain, their response would be much harsher than the Israeli one!

The U.S. used nuclear bombs for pearl harbor. Imagine what would the U.S.’s response be if a big militia entered the mainland, took hostages with them, shot civilians on sight. In the most benign response, they would just bomb everything and everyone.

The same goes for britain and france except that in their case, similar to israel, the whole existence of the nation would be in danger and that might prompt use of a tactical nuclear weapon and a massive mobilization so that the threat is neutralized for good and at any cost.

That’s my opinion. Even one american dying in some altercation makes a ton of headlines. Now imagine thousands of americans killed, and hundreds taken.

Example: Unlike the IDF which sends evacuation notices, the U.S. military couldn’t care less when they blew up a civilian bridge in iran. Not even an evacuation notice. Let’s not forget the 150 children in a school that was hit directly. And no investigation. Imagine if israel did that. In none of those cases, the U.S. or its people were under imminent threat. The bridge wouldn’t run away. They just didn’t care and blew up civilians.

Do germans avoid using “dass das” because it sounds weird like “that that” in english?

In english, while grammatically correct, it’s kinda eerie to use “that that” as in: I’ve learned that that car is no longer available.

In deutsch, there’s a similar case: Ich habe hearusgefunden, dass das badezimmer zu klein ist.

There’s another way to say this: Ich habe herausgefunden, das badezimmer ist zu klein.

Which form is preferred? Do people avoid a “dass” followed by a “das” because it sounds weird? Is the second form preferred?

How tall does a man/woman need to be to be considered“tall” in NL?

The NL is well-known for their tall men and women. In countries like the U.S., 180 and above is considered tall. And also any girl above 170 is also considered tall.

But an average dutch boy is 185cm. So how tall do they have to be to be called tall? 190? 195? 200?

I’m personally from the middle east and I’m 193. That puts me at around 90-95 percentile of men. Here women are rarely over 165. 175 and higher for women is super rare and super tall here for women.

Why do dome MPIs cease to exist? (e.g. MPI for neurological research)

MPI institutes, though independent from each other, are all accredited academic institutions with high standards. I’d be surprised if they ever had an issue obtaining funding or applicants.

While doing my literature review, I came across some prominent authors in the field i was doing a research in, who were an employee of the MPI. When I contacted them, they let me know that the institute is gone. Just gone. Poof. Does not exist anymore. And the data for their research was gone as well.

I was so dumbfounded. How and why would an MPI just cease to exist? What might’ve caused it? Is this rare or common?

How healthy are the dutch people? Do all of them have diabetes?

From what I’ve read on this sub: the dutch people love eating junk food for lunch e.g. nutella with bread. they also love to put mayo on everything. They also don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet. And they don’t wear bicycle helmets.

My belief has always been that the netherlands is a first-world country. So why doesn’t the education system insist on wearing helmets and eating healthier foods?

I know the dutch are the tallest of all countries, so do people look obese or what?

Does everyone suffer from metabolic syndrome?

Why aren’t there any BCI PhD programs?

I’ve been looking around and all I see are the following programs:
Cognitive neuroscience
Psyhology
Biomed engineering

All very general and not focused on the topic of BCIs.

I don’t see computational neuroscience or neural engineering or BCI as the focus of the programs. Have you seen any?
I don’t want to be a psychologist or neuroscientist. BCI itself is already too big. There’s already too much to learn. I want a program with focus on EEG, data mining, computer science, neurophysiology.

Does it exist?

Me studying for years about freud’s theories or structure of neuronal cytoplasm will be me wasting my time while I could’ve done more research on ERPs etc.

Anyone else feel my pain?

Do you see china growing in the EU market as a threat or an opportunity?

This is about china becoming the market leader in industries like: automotive, technology, public transportation.

Below I’ll mention some frequently mentioned talking points:

  1. Some people are concerned about china’s authoritarian nature, and think that china gaining higher market share will give china more leverage on Europe. Data protection is a similar story.

  2. Some are concerned about unethical manufacturing of Chinese products, lackluster quality standards, or intellectual property theft practiced by Chinese manufacturers.

  3. Others believe that letting china in, will allow for more competition, and lower prices for the EU citizens. While some claim china will then hike up the prices once it achieves a monopoly, others claim that china has already achieved a monopoly in some cases and hasn’t jacked up the prices because of internal competition.

  4. Some believe china is a good tool for reducing reliance on the United states. And for having more cards when negotiating matters with the U.S.!

What is your opinion as an EU citizen?

Do you think it was a mistake for ukraine to give up its nukes?

I’m not from ukraine. I think they tricked ukraine in giving up its nukes and promised to protect ukraine. I would say they didn’t keep their promise. Europeans are living everyday life in complete peace because ukrainian boys born in 2001 have to defend europe against russia.

At least if ukraine had nukes, maybe the pig (putin) would think twice before invading.
Many say ukraine couldn’t use them anyway but i don’t agree. If ukraine couldn’t ever use them, why did the west insist on ukraine giving up its nukes?

But i’m not from ukraine and i want to know your opinion.

Why and how do the Houthis still control the “.ye” domain name?

I recently saw a post by the Houthis threatening the KSA. In that post, they referred the reader to the mmy.ye website. I was surprised to see that Houthis have a .ye website since the international community does not recognize the Houthis as Yemen, but rather the republic that fights the Houthis, as the legitimate Yemen. And it wouldn’t make sense for the republic of Yemen to assign domain names to its enemies.
So i dug deeper and apparently, in 2015 during the fall of San’a, Yemen’s former capital, YemenNet, the registrar of the “.ye” domains, fell into the hands of the Houthis and they control San’a to this day.

However, as far as i know, the ICANN controls the DNS as its highest levels. Since no one in the western world considers the Houthis as real Yemen, why hasn’t ICANN or the 12 structures controlling the root servers, take control of the “.ye” domain name and allow the republic of Yemen to once again become the registrar of this domain?

How can I convince academic papers’ authors to send me their data?

I’m trying to do a pooled analysis or Integrative data analysis on an ERP related topic. Currently most studies regarding the issue i’m working on suffer from small sample sizes and lack of enough trials per person. That’s why i want to go the pooled analysis route, despite its pitfalls.

While some papers share their EEG data publicly, most studies claim their data can be obtained via a “reasonable” request from the corresponding author.
What constitutes a reasonable request? What’s considered unreasonable?

I’m currently sending written requests to the corresponding authors of studies. Let me know if you have any tips. Thanks!
