Para to sub?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a paraprofessional and recently had the opportunity to apply as a substitute teacher in a neighboring district. I’m trying to weigh the pros and cons before making any decisions and would love to hear from people who have experienced either role.

If you’ve gone from para to sub, what was the transition like? Did you find the increased flexibility worth it? How did the pay, job satisfaction, and stress levels compare?

If you’ve gone from sub back to para, what made you switch? Did you miss the consistency and relationships that come with being assigned to the same classroom?

A little context: I enjoy working with students and I’m finishing my bachelor’s degree soon. My biggest concern is trading a more reliable paycheck for a position where work might not always be guaranteed.

I’d appreciate any advice, experiences, or things you wish you had known before making the switch. Thanks in advance!
