This thing is crazy

I got the X3, attached it to the back of my phone and before I knew it finished 6 books in 2 weeks. Prior to this I had a reading goal of 6 for the year, not really expecting much because I knew it was going to be a busy year and I had read a whopping total of 0 before July. What even is this device! Worth the hype and more

Swipe required on weekends?

Hi everyone - looking for a reliable study space around me, is it true that to access Swinburne Hawthorn library on weekends a swipe is required? I live relatively close to the uni and am really keen to study at the library but am not a current Swinburne student

Psychologist recs?

PGY1 really struggling in my search for a long-term psychologist, wondering if anyone would recommend their own psychologist for i.e imposter syndrome, self esteem issues, people pleasing etc. intermittently having doubts on whether i am suitable for this career in the first place.

The thing I value most is a psychologist who is not a yes man, someone who can look at a situation with some objectivity and give it to me like it is. If they have some insight into how this job can be that is a bonus.

I’m aware there are services like Drs4Drs - but I’m not really in any acute distress, just someone I can work with long term on my issues. Not fussed about price/gender/online or in-person - as long as they are someone you’d vouch for.

Grateful for any and all advice!

Is this normal? Medical workforce making me sort out my own conference leave

Hello, PGY1 here and still trying to figure out how the system works, so please let me know if I’m misunderstanding the process.

I’ve applied for conference leave twice this year, and both times my request has effectively been declined because I was told they can’t facilitate it and if I wanted it I need to organise it myself with the Head of Unit/relevant department. Is this not the job of medical workforce?

For both applications I gave over 6 months notice. The first time, I ended up missing my scheduled research presentation because I couldn’t get leave approved. The second time, I was told I’d be “put on the waitlist.” When I asked where I was on the waitlist, I was told they don't "manage the leave planner" so they wouldn't be able to tell me.

I’m honestly at a bit of a loss. Is this to be expected or am I overreacting? Do I need to be more firm/reach out to AMA? How do people actually get conference leave approved?

EDIT: thank you for all the suggestions as to points of contact. I wanted to ask here to make sure I’m not being unreasonable. I tend to avoid confrontation and last thing I want to do is to be seen as problematic or demanding by the hospital but I hope this is OK.

How to have a good relationship with nurses as a female junior doctor?

I’m starting to lose hope this is even achievable. I try my best to learn nurses’ names, make sure to say please and thank you at the end of every request, try to respond in a timely manner when paged or messaged and still feel like it’s not good enough.

Today when I asked for a Resp PCR for a symptomatic patient, I was questioned in front of others, in an extremely rude and passive aggressive manner, whether I had even seen the patient which I found very disrespectful. I highly doubt the same tone or wording would have been used with a registrar or a male doctor. I seriously wonder sometimes where I am even going wrong.

The attitude of some of the nurses I’ve worked with so far are seriously reportable and I swear this kind of behaviour is never called out and even encouraged among their peers and I’m at a loss as to what additional things I can say or do and in what way I can act so nurses are happier to oblige?
