What’s your experience ?

My riding teacher told me that when the area above a horse’s eye looks convex or raised rather than hollow/concave, like in these photos, he considers it a warning sign and would advise me not to get on the horse.

I’m still quite new to horses, and I hadn’t heard this before, so I’m curious about other people’s experience. Have you been taught something similar? Have you noticed any connection between the shape or tension around this area and a horse’s behaviour, discomfort or state of mind?

I understand that you can’t judge a horse’s temperament or safety from one physical feature alone—I’m mainly interested in where this idea comes from and whether experienced horse people actually find it useful. Thank you.

Do you feel younger / less mature than neurotypical people your age?

Sometimes it feels like I’m 2/3 years behind people my age and it makes me feel self conscious… and ashamed. Sometimes it also scares me, especially when I can’t read social context very well. Just wanted to know if anyone felt like this too. Thank you.

finished my sketchbook

I bought a notebook from the Tiger store 3 years ago and i’ve only used it in between other sketchbooks when i felt a bit off. There are so many memories in this pocket sized book - it feels like saying goodbye to an old friend

is he okay?

I’m allowed to be around this horse because its old, but i’ve noticed some marks. Is this age or does he need cream / treatment?

what’s happening with his skin?

I went to see this horse and i noticed some marks. I know very little about horses so i was wondering if you knew what these are and if there is something I can do?

Can i paint on these? 🙂?

I found an ikea drawer box… but there’s this thing growing in them.. and i’ve tried washing it but it doesn’t go away.

Do i need to treat wood? Or can i just paint on it? Or is it best to throw away?

Book recommendations for learning about horse culture

Hi! I’m looking for books that teach me about horses themselves rather than riding techniques.

I’d love to learn about horse behavior, communication, welfare, husbandry, health, breeds, how they think, and why people manage them the way they do.

I’m a beginner, so I’m looking for books that are accurate but accessible. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Any book recommendations for someone interested in Western horsemanship?

Hi again! 😊

I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s replies to my previous posts—they’ve made me realize how much there is for me to learn.

I live in Spain, so I don’t really have access to the world many of you describe, but I’d still love to learn from it.

I’m especially interested in Western horsemanship, ranch horses, and the relationship between people and their horses. I’d also love to better understand the traditions, practical knowledge, and philosophy behind the way you work with horses and cattle.

Any recommendation is welcome. Thank you!

What’s something you wish more people understood about your way of life?

I have a feeling the media only shows a small part of what being a cowboy is actually like. So, what’s something you wish more people understood about you?

Are there certain aspects you feel get romanticized or others that simply aren’t portrayed accurately?

Beginner needing help: how do you give eye drops to a horse?

This horse has an irritated/watery eye. It hasn’t been seen by a vet, so for now I’ve only bought sterile saline to gently rinse the eye and lubricating eye drops for dry eyes.

I’ve been asked to put them in, but I’ve never given medication to a horse before and nobody has had time to show me how

I’ve never medicated a horse before and nobody has had time to show me how, so I’d really appreciate any advice on the safest way to do it.

Every time I get near his eye, he moves his head away.

Could anyone explain the safest way to give eye drops to a horse? Is there a particular technique or position that makes it easier?

I’m also attaching a few photos. I’m not expecting a diagnosis from pictures, but if this looks like something that really shouldn’t be managed with just saline/lubricating drops, I’d appreciate knowing that too. Thank you!

What makes a good ranch horse? 🐴

Hi! I’m from Spain 🇪🇸 and lately I’ve grown really interested in learning more about Western riding and horsemanship.

I’m still very much a beginner when it comes to horses, and because of where I live, I’m mostly surrounded by PREs/Andalusian horses and that’s naturally what I’ve been learning about. But recently I’ve realized I’d really like to learn about different horses and different horse cultures too, especially the traditions around ranching and working horses in the US.

So I was curious — what makes a horse a good ranch horse? Are there certain breeds, sizes, builds or temperaments that people look for?

How are they trained for ranch work, and how are they usually kept when they’re not working?

And since PREs are what I’m most familiar with here, I’m also curious about whether they can be good horses for your line of work?

**I know that’s a lot of questions, so thank you to anyone who takes the time to answer! I really appreciate it :)**

Meeting Príncipe

I was allowed to photograph Príncipe while he was let loose in the plaza. I think hes 3 years old (and the best boy) - he likes jaw scratches
