how did you handle "coming out" as childfree to traditional/immigrant parents when they treat grandkids as a given?

hey everyone, i’m 27 and i’ve known for a while now that i’m never having kids. a huge reason for this is that i’m the eldest daughter in a middle eastern immigrant family. growing up i was heavily parentified and basically adultified from a super young age. i was basically a third parent, always helping my parents navigate everything in the country they immigrated to, taking on tons of responsibility, and i never really got to have an actual childhood. besides that, my childhood was unfortunately abusive and traumatic.

now that i’m approaching 30, the absolute last thing i want to do is sign up for another lifetime of caretaking. as egoistical as this might sound for some parents…. i just want to finally live for myself.

i’m currently in a long-term relationship, and because of that, my family just naturally assumes kids are the obvious next step. people don't even ask if i want them…it's just treated as a given fact. my partner doesn’t want kids either. my mom constantly says things like, "when you have kids, i'll do this for them" or "when you're a mom, we can do that." up until now, i've just been ignoring it and keeping quiet, but I’ve never actually had "the talk" with her.

In my family and culture, motherhood isn't just an expectation, it's pretty much mandatory. choosing not to have kids is treated like a total scandal. to make matters even more intense, i have a sister (couple years younger) and she doesn't want kids either, so my family are going to be in for a real shock 🤣

for those of you who are older or come from similar traditional/immigrant backgrounds: how did you handle this? did you actually sit your family down and "come out" as childfree before you hit 30, or did you just live your life, keep quiet, and let them eventually figure it out when the grandkid questions fell flat?
would love to hear how you guys navigated the cultural pressure and fallout. thanks!

Got humbled by the Essaouira souks 😭 How do I stop paying tourist prices?

Hi everyone! I’m 27F visiting Morocco for the first time. I spent my first week in Oualidia, visited Safi, and I’m heading to Agadir tomorrow.

I’ve genuinely loved Morocco so far. People in Oualidia and Safi were incredibly kind and welcoming, and some of my favorite moments were random interactions with locals. I don’t speak Arabic or French, so there was a LOT of communicating through my phone and hand gestures 😭 but somehow we always understood each other.

Then I went to Essaouira yesterday and… got humbled lol.

I immediately noticed how much more touristy it felt (mind you… I haven‘t even been to Marrakesh yet), especially when it came to prices. I’ve traveled quite a lot and thought I was pretty good at spotting tourist traps, but apparently not 😭 I ended up paying around €50/530 MAD for a bunch of spices, tea, Nila soap etc. and realized afterwards that I probably paid a very generous tourist premium.

I also found negotiating surprisingly difficult. Some sellers were quite pushy and didn‘t move on their prices a bit, even when I tried bargaining.

Since I’m spending another week around Agadir: How do you know what a reasonable price is, and what are the biggest tourist traps I should watch out for?
For context, I actually like tipping generously and supporting local businesses. I don’t care about paying slightly more as a tourist…. I just don’t want to unknowingly pay 3x the normal price 😭
Would especially love advice from Moroccans/local people! ❤️🇲🇦

3 days post laparoscopy and my belly button hurts SO much?? 😭 Also confused about scar care

I had a laparoscopy for endometriosis 3 days ago and honestly the thing that hurts the most right now is my belly button 😭 Apparently that’s where they put the camera through, but wow… I was not prepared for how sore and sensitive it would feel. It almost feels bruised internally and moving/getting up hurts the most.

Did anyone else experience this? How long did it take for the belly button pain to calm down? I also asked my doctor about scar treatment (silicone gel, silicone scar sheets/plasters etc.) and they actually told me NOT to use anything for now and just leave the incisions open, keep them clean, and drink a lot of water. But online I keep reading completely different advice and I already panic-ordered silicone scar sheets 😅

What did your doctors recommend for scar care after laparoscopy? Did you use silicone gel/sheets and did they help?
Any tips for minimizing scars and helping healing overall?
Would really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences 🩷

First surgery ever in 3 days .. what do you wish someone had told you before/after surgery?

Hi everyone, I’m having laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis in 3 days and I’m honestly terrified. This is my first surgery ever, first time under anesthesia, first hospital stay… everything. I’ve been trying to stay calm and prepare myself, but I feel like there are so many little things nobody tells you until you experience them yourself.

So I wanted to ask people who’ve already gone through it: What do you wish you knew before surgery? What helped you most during recovery? Things to buy beforehand?

What should I be careful about after surgery? Any tips for the gas pain, sleeping, walking, eating, bathroom situation, scars, etc.? How long did it realistically take you to feel “normal” again?

I think I’m especially scared of the unknown and losing control a bit. Would really appreciate any honest advice or recovery hacks. I unfortunately made horrible experiences with doctors (I have endo+ade) and realized that the comnunity is way more helpful. THANK YOU ALL!!!
