Orange kitten with an extra brain cell? Or just the CDS

I'm in a pretty rural area and my roommate and I sit outside most afternoon and evening watching the birds, bunnies and whatever else. Lately we've been watching a feral cat, who has been named Sally wander around as well.

So today Sally comes FULL SPEED from a neighbors house to under the pile of telephone poles on the side of our lot. She had something fuzzy and orange in her mouth. And hour later? Same, fuzzy and black... Then a grey tabby... Then another orange.

So we're like, cool, kittens! I love feral cats cuz this is rattlesnake area and cats mean no mice mean no rattlers to bite my dogs. We decided to put a food dish down for her later. Under the poles is a pretty good little den area for her so we're excited to watch the kittens grow and keep em in the area.

Not long after she ran the last one there's a storm rolling in. It dropped to 50 degrees fast and the rain is coming. I decided to run my trash out because rain makes the alley a mudslide. The dumpster is right next to the pile of poles.

I come around and am greeted by one of the orange kittens standing on TOP of the poles screaming at me.

I call over roommate who scales the pile, intending to grab kitty and stick him back in the den with mom.

Well... This little kitten was all eye goop and respiratory infection cough and just gave him this look like "I'm over the outside thing, can we go home now?". He picked it up and little dude climbed up him and nested down in the hood of his sweatshirt.

The rain was starting, so we couldn't just stick the poor guy back, so in the house he came. We got his eyes cleaned up, fed him a bit of kitten milk we had around and he just settled in and went to sleep, happy as can be.

Now his name is Toby and he has a vet appointment for tomorrow to get him all healthy again. He's probably 4 or 5 weeks old, pudgy and active.

I'm just kind of shaking my head at the little orange cat that was smart enough to ask for help just before the storm came down on him.

And yes, we're keeping an eye out for the other 3 and if they pop up they'll be going to the vet too and get homed. But Toby? It was love at first sight for both him and my roommate, so I guess we have a cat now.

The last orange I had was an old man when I adopted him like 20 years ago, so I'm interested to see the trouble he'll get in once he's healthy.

Not so feral kitten decides the wood pile just won't do

I'm in a pretty rural area and my roommate and I sit out front watching the birds and stuff. Today we saw the feral cat we see sometimes running across the yard and under a pile of telephone poles at the edge of our property with something orange in her mouth... Then back with something black, then grey tabby and another orange.

So we're like cool! Kittens! Under the poles is a great little den area and we'll put out food for her. We've had mice, so feral cats would be kinda welcome honestly... Plus no mice means no rattlesnakes and that's always a good thing.

A storm was coming in, about to get heavy rain and it got cold. I decided to take the trash to the dumpster next to the pile and what do I see? Little orange man on top of the pile screaming at me. Guess he climbed up through the den to the top. Impressive at this size considering it's a pile of like 15 full telephone poles.

So roommate climbs up to grab him with the intent of sticking him back into the den for momma.... Kitten just looked up at him like "can we go now? I'm over this outside thing". He screamed until roommate picked him up then climbed up and burrowed into his hoodie. He looks maybe like 6 weeks old, pudgy and active.

The rain started hard, so in the house with us he went.

His eyes were fully gooped closed so we got em cleaned and he has the sniffles too, so vet appointment already set for tomorrow and roommate is fully in love.... Kitten is in love too. This is Toby.

My relax time lately has been sitting in front of my house and watching my birdfeeders. It's time when my room-mate and I put down the screens, listen to some music and let nature entertain us.

Special thanks to the people here who showed me the different apps I can get to identify the birds, I've been enjoying learning about who is showing up.

Well yesterday we got the biggest surprise! We have a few ringneck doves that come in as a clean up crew and pick at the seed the littles drop out of the tube feeder.

I look over and one looks different. It was a bit skinnier than the doves usually are and a bit darker. It had white on its wings, giving it like a white stripe down each side.

Of course I fired up my app and NO FREAKING WAY! It's an honest to God White Wing Dove! I didn't even know that was a real bird!

As huge Stevie fans we were both totally thrilled and now we're going to scatter extra seed on the ground to try to get her to come back. We give all the different bird types nicknames, so of course it's now called a Stevie.
