"Graphics [...] only need to be good enough so that it doesn't interfere with the gameplay [...] Hardware is only a tool [...] it's how you use it, and what you use it for that's important [...] Just because the graphics are good, doesn't mean the game will be emotionally expressive." - Naotoshi Jin

I was perusing the interviews on shmuplations and found this one with FromSoftware's founder Naotoshi Jin talking about the upcoming PS2 back in 1999. I thought it was a refreshingly sober and 'anti-hype' assessment of new tech that still feels relevant in 2026.

If you haven't tried playing arcade games without using any continues, give it a go! I've been practicing my DonPachi run and it's been super fun!

When was the first time you realised actual people make games?

Obviously as a kid I understood abstractly that someone had to make the things I enjoyed, but still it totally changed my perspective on games when I actually got to see/hear the people behind them.

I remember Will Wright demoing the beta build of Spore, Peter Molyneux talking up Fable 3, Jade Raymond and Patrice Desilets explaining the vision behind the original Assassin's Creed games, and the interviews with Casey Hudson and the other leads that came on the Mass Effect disc.

(You can tell from my list the era I grew up in haha)

So who do you remember being your first exposure to game developers, on camera or in print?

EDIT: To clarify, which specific developers do you first remember seeing interviews with talking about the games they were making? As opposed to just vaguely being aware that games you like are made by some group of people whose names you don't know haha
