Loved this year’s county fair… but gee, do you think they had enough sheriff’s deputies? /s
On the whole, enjoyed myself and had a really nice time. But man, you couldn’t turn around without seeing a trio of deputies decked out to the nines. Is there such a history of crime at a simple summer fair that so many heavily armed officers are necessary? It was more than a little creepy and didn’t lend itself well to the general atmosphere of… well, a fair.
Anyway. Just my two cents. Christ, I’d forgotten how good those sweet buns are.
No, we cannot “chance you.” If you have to ask, “am I cooked?”, you are cooked.
That’s the gist of it. Every application is totally dependent on the broader context in which it exists - how many students the program is looking to take, the overall quality of the applicant pool, etc. So no, nobody can “chance you.”
One problem I’ve noticed getting worse in recent application cycles is the growing proportion of applicants who cannot handle uncertainty. Those applicants are never going to succeed in graduate school. Never. They won’t be able to write grants or publish manuscripts, because they can’t cope with ambiguity. They need black-and-white answers, and they need them now.
Okay, soapbox moment over. This post has been brought to you by the sheer number of “chance me”/“am I cooked” smooth-brained posts clogging up the subreddit. Academia is almost entirely characterized by leaps of faith. The sooner y’all get comfortable with them, the happier you (and your grad coordinators) will be.
Want to learn to play football at UC Davis? Disbanding the Football Team is a win for ALL students who want to play football at Davis
… Just kidding. That’d be ridiculous.
Special thanks to /u/Think_Resolve1957 for inspiring me to postify their comment. Even more thanks to /u/Equivalent_Panic5303 for writing the inane manifesto that inspired the comment in the first place.
Canceling the Equestrian team isn’t going to magically make more space in riding lessons. Those are dependent on the number of staff and lesson horses available. If anything, the Equestrian Center is going to suffer and the classes might be canceled a few years down the road. And as someone who is actually in the Guardian Angel program and taking lessons regularly, the EQC is such a special and unique resource to our campus. Knocking the Equestrian team down to club status is necessarily going to take resources away from the EQC. To think otherwise is short-sighted and utterly at odds with the reality of how UC Davis Athletics and Campus Rec conduct their operations.
I’m begging all of you to think critically about this, not just go with the casually misogynistic “bUt hOrSe giRLs” mob mentality. You’re members of the UC Davis community. You owe it to yourselves to not swallow the party line handed to you by the campus’ highest-paid lowest common denominator.
Thought y’all might appreciate a random fanfic idea…
Contemporary AU in which the Blythe and Meredith kids play D&D, with Jem as their DM. The Piper is the final boss. Some character choices are incredibly obvious (e.g., Carl wants to play a druid, Walter wants to play a cleric), whereas others are more aspirational (Faith insists on being a barbarian and threatens to go into a real-life rage if denied the chance). Una waits for the others to build their characters and bases her character on what characteristics she thinks the party needs. They are initially reluctant to let Mary Vance into the party, but she turns out to be an incredible bard whose inspired combat choices only slightly outstrip her tendency to monopolize role play. Bertie Shakespeare is occasionally invited, but Mrs. Drew doesn’t let him go because she thinks D&D is Satanic.
Random and/or silly contributions would be much appreciated. 😁
Thank you to the organizers of Woodland Pride!!
It was so fun and engaging. The DJ had great energy and kept the party going all the way into the afternoon. Thank you for the immaculate vibes. Special shout-out to the two folks dressed as the Lorax, y’all made my day!
So is Yolobus accepting the old app until 6/30 or not???
Because I just got denied entry and left in the middle of downtown Sac without a means home on the basis that it was “the old app.” But they’re supposed to accept those passes through the end of the month, aren’t they??
And to the middle-aged redhead driver with the shitty beard: Those negative remarks on your performance eval are from me. I had cash, you absolute bastard.
Let’s play a game: Where are you in SR, and can you hear the country music?
I’m in Fountaingrove, and it’s loud enough that if I knew the genre, I could identify the songs. 🙃
A gentle reminder to please, for the love of your fellow bus-riders, wear deodorant.
This is specifically directed toward the young man in the tan 99 jersey on the 4:10pm Z, but can be widely applied to many of y’all (College of Engineering…)
This bus is three minutes late, no sign of the driver. Please, send help… every second that passes, tens of your classmates are in danger of suffocating under the reek of burnt armpit. Opening the windows can only do so much. I have had it with these motherfucking smells on this motherfucking bus. O, the inhumanity!
Great youth theater at Casa and Cinnabar :)
Hi there, fellow Petalumans! Just thought I’d share a tip for other theater-lovers in the area: I had the immense pleasure of seeing Casa Grande’s production of “Carrie” and Cinnabar Young Rep’s production of “Macbeth” last month, and was blown away by the talent of our local young folks. If you have the means to make it to a school/youth theater production, you may be in for a better night than you anticipated!
Not naming names, because teens - but there were some seriously phenomenal performances in that pack. The young man and lady playing Macbeth and Lady Mac were perfectly cast, and the young women playing Carrie and Margaret White had terrific voices on top of great acting skill.
Many of the youngsters in both those casts are currently in Cinnabar’s “Something Rotten,” and I’m looking forward to seeing it this weekend! Based on their talents, I think it’ll be really special.
