[SOTC - Patek/AP/Rolex]

After a lot of buying, selling, and pouring over specs, I think I finally landed on a solid three watch collection that feels “complete” to me. Each one scratches a very different itch and gets worn regularly, which was important, especially if I was going to have a multi-watch collection. I didn’t want safe queens or redundant pieces.

I know these are probably “obvious” choices in a lot of ways: Aquanaut, Royal Oak, vintage Sub. Yawn. But I’ve stopped caring whether something is too predictable, too easy, or too hyped. I just love them. And all the better that they feel like a fun store of value instead of just cash sitting around. They all wear beautifully, they all bring me joy, and each one hits a different part of what I enjoy about watches.

Selling a pair of Yuketen loafers in size 9E. Made in the USA with Yuketen’s rugged handsewn construction and chunky lug sole. Dark brown/black leather with heavy natural texture, moc-toe stitching, penny strap detail, and a substantial outdoor-style sole.

These have been worn and show visible patina throughout, including creasing, scuffing, edge wear, and roughness around the handsewn stitching. The leather has a great broken-in, worn-in character. Soles still have plenty of life left.

I know the 5167A (40mm) is the more commonly lauded modern Aquanaut choice but after owning both, I believe the 5165A (38mm) is the better watch.

The 5167A is better if you want more wrist presence, but the dial feels like it has a little too much empty black space. The 5165A feels far more balanced to me — better text-to-dial ratio, tighter proportions, and a sportier/easier wear. It blends with the wrist instead of completely taking it over. Cleaner date window and general presentation (lack of Swiss Made at bottom reads cleaner).

Curious how others feel, especially people who have owned or tried both. Is the 5167A actually the better Aquanaut, or did Patek nail the design more cleanly with the 5165A?

Also interesting in light of the recent 38mm Nautilus release… it feels like Patek may be leaning back into smaller, better-proportioned sport watches.
