Cloverstock is happening now at the Clovers on Forum, and it's delightful! Lovely vendors, cool non-profits, lots of good food trucks, Logboat and live music. We are so lucky to have a local business like Clover's that cares so deeply for our community AND has a fabulous (now annual) festival. It's going until 4 pm! 1400 Forum Blvd.
There is ample evidence that John Martin (44th District) lives near Midway. He owns an uninhabited house in the 44th District, which he bought after he lost the election in his home District (47) so he could "legally" run in the 44th. Everyone seems to accept this fact in this supposedly safe red district, but I am furious about it. So if you live in the 44th, go vote for ANYBODY but the disingenuous, hypocritical cheater guy, John Martin. We have a chance for real representation in the 44th this year - get out and vote!!

Local businessman, Fred Parry, who has become a strong advocate of historic preservation of late, has now joined the battle against demolition and had a passionate post about it that included a survey to gather people who want to save the historic building. Well I'm back with more ice cream commentary! In my last post, Arbuckle's came up and I admit I hadn't been for years. So I took the kids today and it was great! Free, easy parking just off Rollins, fun flavors - classics and some "experimental" flavors, really good ice cream (tasted very old fashioned) and it was cheap! $3 for a huge scoop! And a nice, old fashioned atmosphere with lots of peaceful indoor and outdoor seating - a little like Central Dairy, but with college students making up flavors 😅 The hours are a little limited, but it's a perfect after-school ice cream spot. We loved it. So, if the downtown ice cream scene isn't for you, highly recommend Bucks! And no, they aren't paying me - I just like ice cream 🤷🏼♀️
I am going to rant here - but seriously, this is completely insane. How can Columbia tear down this piece of history? It is a beautiful building inside and out, it is a historic landmark, it is a tie to the MKT and all the great history of the railroad. It is a downtown institution. We have already lost so many buildings to apartments and other development - come on Columbia, what the fuck. I am feeling so deeply upset about this potential loss. Short of chaining myself to it (or buying it, which obviously I cannot do because I am a middle class person just trying to afford groceries) WHAT CAN WE DO? Y'all this is not ok.
I'm not impressed. First of all, $8 for one scoop of ice and a cone is insane. Secondly, although their cones have "flavors" we all tried a different flavor (lavender, birthday cake, french vanilla and the black one) and they all tasted the same. The black one turned my mouth black, which makes me think their "flavors" are just food coloring. The ice cream itself was just ok, very sweet (like, I know that sounds insane - it's ICE CREAM - but yet, it was sweeter than most). Some fun flavors, but not worth $6 a scoop. I will continue to patronize our beloved, slightly grungy, eccentric Sparky's for affordable, fun ice cream. And Central Dairy in Jeff City whenever possible for the real deal ice cream parlor experience. Maybe the arrival of Clementine's will make the line at Sparky's slightly shorter, I am sure there are people out there who like over priced ice cream!

My family member is in pretty good health and active, but is 79, lives alone and just can't keep up with everything. It's election day, go vote!! And if you live in the 44th District remember our CURRENT state representative (John Martin) doesn't even live in our district! He just bought a house here (that he doesn't live in) so that he could win a seat in the MO House in the last red district in Boone County. He lives at a Rocheport address. Somehow, this is legal but it sure isn't representative. Remember that in the general election in 3 months and let's vote him out!
Also I am voting YES on 1 (YAY State Parks!), no on 4 and no on 5. Happy voting!!
I have been reading about the new star gazing cabins in Cooper Rock and planning a visit to them next summer with my family. I have a couple of questions.
If anyone has stayed in the cabins - how are they? What else is there to do in Coopers Rock? I see lots of hiking, climbing and fishing - which is great. Any other things to know about?
Are there any good swimming holes/creek/river swimming in or near Coopers Rock? Are the rafting trips near the park worth it?
In addition, we are planning to visit Seneca Rocks, Audra State Park and we will also visit the very edge of Virginia (George Washington National Forest) to hike in the Locust Spring/Laurel Fork area where I spent a summer doing trail work in high school with a youth conservation program. We'll see if the trails we built held up for 30 years! We're finishing with visiting family in Pittsburgh.
I haven't been here since 1995 and I am so excited to return. I would love any suggestions or notes from local WV folks about this area! I am traveling with my husband, 2 kids (9 & 11) we are avid hikers and love all swimming holes. This is for a trip for summer 2027, just planning early to make sure I get cabin reservations. I am one of the unlucky folks who had a ticket on the Lakeshore tonight. There is track work between Chicago and Toledo, so they're bussing us all to Toledo. Our bus is a nightmare. It's old and cramped, the temp is about about 55 degrees, our bus driver hits the rumble strips about every five minutes and we're all a little worried he is sleepy at the wheel. Someone complained about him hitting the rumble strips so much and now he's just cruising in the left lane getting passed by semis on the right in the fog. We have 35 minutes left to Toledo. Please send thoughts and prayers 😬
I love our little local natural market! Yesterday I bought organic blackberries and blueberries from Clovers and then went to Trader Joe's for snacks and TJ's organic berries were a whole $1-2 more. I find that Clover's is cheaper than TJs or Natural Grocers and even Gerbes on many items and honestly the produce is a thousand times fresher. I swear they didn't pay me to write this, I just wanted to make a little love note to them 💗🍀 We are SO lucky to have a local grocery store like that one.
