Sanity check

Haven’t been to a game this year, so probably what I’m asking is nothing new…just wanted to make sure it’s right before I tell the group.

Was hoping to go to the Saturday game against the Mariners with a decent-sized group (6+) but I don’t see anything available for less than $200/ticket, which isn’t in our budget. There will be a few kids with us, so General Admission isn’t a good option as I understand you don’t get seats for that.

Am I missing something? Is there somewhere else I should be looking? Or is that just the cost these days with all the World Series excitement?

Sanity check for travel plans (public transit)

Mostly just want to make sure I’m not making any obvious mistakes with my travel plans.

Will be coming from near Islington station, so my plan:
- from Islington station, take the #2 subway line east to St George station
- from St George, take the #1 subway line north to Highway 407 station
- from Highway 407, take the 320 express

I see others suggesting getting the 320 at VMC station rather than highway 407, any real difference?

Biggest thing giving me headaches is that I don’t live in the city and dont have a presto pass or anything. Will be travelling with one teenager. Is it easy enough to tap us both on and off at those stops? I know when I used to go to thornhill as a teenager, I had to pay another fair when going north of finch.

We plan on taking an uber back because we’ll probably stay pretty late, but I wouldn’t mind saving a few bucks by taking transit there at least.

Edit: thanks everyone for the great tips and suggestions! A kindly family member is actually going to give us a ride there in the end (and we’ll uber home once exhausted), but I’ll leave this post up because I think the tips can help others as well. And I definitely learned a few things for future trips.

Buying fast passes in advance

Planning on flying in next week with my son for his annual trip and favourite day of his year. Hoping for everyone’s sake that the fires and air quality issues are mostly resolved by then!

Just in case, I am planning on buying our tickets and fast passes at the last minute - is there any risk to this? Do they typically sell out or increase in price at the last minute, or anything else I’m missing?

Mason Miller was barreled over the weekend, leaving Tyler Rogers as the only qualified pitcher yet to allow one.

Link to table

Joc Pederson barreled Mason Miller over the weekend, which is the first one that Miller has surrendered this season. See also: list of all barrels over the weekend; click a row to expand details and get a link to a video of the play (ad-free).

Out of 360 qualified pitchers (1.25 PA per team game), only Tyler Rogers has yet to be barreled.

At the other extreme, Tomoyuki Sugano has been barreled 38 times.

Rental car lots vs shuttles at YYZ

Need to rent a car at YYZ and will have some very quick turnarounds. I know you can rent from some of the smaller companies much more cheaply, but I’ve had iffy experiences with them and want to avoid the shuttle hassles.

For the larger companies, I know they all have desks inside the terminals. But some searching seems to suggest you still need to take a shuttle to get to the actual car.

So my question is - do the larger companies actually need a shuttle to get to the cars? Or is it like other airports where they’re parked in the big parking garage behind the terminal and you just walk back.

I should note that while I’ll be really tight for time, I also do not have mobility issues, so a walk back to the garage or whatever isn’t a problem, I just don’t want to be waiting around for shuttles.

Hope this isn’t too ‘low info’ for a post, but was perusing some WPA leaderboards and noticed something about Andres Gimenez that I don’t recall being discussed often.

Gimenez broke into the league in 2020, so I ignored that year because nothing about 2020 should count in any leaderboard.

Since 2021, Gimenez is first in all of MLB in fangraphs ‘clutch’ score, and not by an insignificant margin either with Alex Verdugo the only person particularly close.

https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=3&month=0&ind=0&sortcol=11&sortdir=desc&pageitems=30&startdate=&enddate=&season1=2021&season=2025

Full disclosure: this isn’t necessarily the best leaderboard to be on, as the top of the list has some less than fantastic company (Verdugo, Starlin Castro, IKF), while the ‘least clutch’ hitters includes guys like Judge (literally #1 on the list), Riley, Goldschmidt, Soto, and other guys who miiiiight be slightly better hitters than Gimenez.

Stole this idea from a Jays broadcast, updated/expanded the stats a bit.

Obviously players tend to perform better in wins than losses but Vlad’s numbers this year are truly insane. This is just fun with early numbers and small sample sizes, nothing meaningful, but my goodness are the splits extreme!

In 14 Blue Jays wins:

- .569 batting average;

- hitting mostly singles, for a 569/645/765 line, 1.410 OPS;

- reached base at least twice in every single win;

- 18% walk rate and 4% k-rate.

In 17 Blue Jays losses:

- 177/250/226 for a 0.476 OPS;

- zero homers and only 3 doubles;

- 8% weak rate and 21% k-rate.
