आज रविवार को मैंने महादेवी वर्मा की ‘मेरा परिवार’ फिर से पढ़ी। स्कूल के दिनों में हिंदी की पाठ्यपुस्तकों में उनकी कुछ रचनाएँ पढ़ी थीं। तब भी उनका लेखन अच्छा लगता था, और आज इतने वर्षों बाद भी वही आकर्षण बना हुआ है।

अपने पशु-पक्षी साथियों का उन्होंने जिस कोमलता और स्नेह के साथ चित्रण किया है, वह बार-बार हृदय को स्पर्श करता है। गिल्लू, नीलकंठ, सोना और गौरा जैसे पात्र मात्र जीव-जंतु नहीं रह जाते, बल्कि परिवार के सदस्य बन जाते हैं।

महादेवी जी मनुष्य और पशु-पक्षियों के बीच कोई ऊँची दीवार नहीं खड़ी करतीं। उनके लिए प्रेम, करुणा और अपनापन हर जीव का अधिकार है। उनकी दृष्टि हमें यह सिखाती है कि प्रकृति और जीव-जगत के साथ हमारा संबंध केवल उपयोग का नहीं, बल्कि सह-अस्तित्व का है।

वे बताती हैं कि प्रेम केवल मनुष्यों तक सीमित नहीं है; वह प्रत्येक जीवित प्राणी तक विस्तृत हो सकता है।

इसे पढ़कर लगता है कि दुनिया को समझने के लिए ज्ञान से अधिक एक कोमल हृदय की आवश्यकता होती है।

Translation:-

Today, on Sunday, I reread Mahadevi Verma’s Mera Parivaar. I had read some of her works in my Hindi textbooks during my school days. I admired her writing then, and even after all these years, its charm remains unchanged.

The tenderness and affection with which she portrays her animal and bird companions touch the heart again and again. Characters like Gillu, Neelkanth, Sona, and Gaura cease to be mere animals; they become members of the family.

Mahadevi Verma does not draw a rigid boundary between humans and other living beings. For her, love, compassion, and belonging are the rights of every creature. Her perspective teaches us that our relationship with nature and the living world is not one of utility alone, but of coexistence.

She reminds us that love is not confined to human beings; it can extend to every living creature.

Reading her work makes one feel that understanding the world requires not only knowledge, but also a gentle and compassionate heart.

Here are some of my favourite excerpts from the book Poems from the Sanskrit by John Brough I read almost 3 years ago. This book is an anthology of verses of Bhrathari, Rajsekhara, Sudraka, Kalidasa etc.

A good read for those who want to explore Sanskrit poetry.
