Lead Rwandan genocide financier Kabuga dies at 91 without having faced trial

Félicien Kabuga is believed to have bankrolled key Hutu supremacist militias like the Interahamwe and imported over 500,000 machetes in the leadup to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, which killed an estimated 800,000 to 1,000,000 people. Kabuga fled to Kenya as the genocidal regime fell and later to Paris, where he was arrested by French police in 2020. He was put on trial at The Hague for crimes against humanity, including genocide and extermination. In 2023, he was found unfit to stand trial due to vascular dementia, and he remained in custody until his death today due to his refusal to be repatriated to Rwanda.

Hamawy internal in NJ-12: Hamawy 19, Altman 12, Cohen 11, Reynolds-Jackson 10 (approx half other/undecided)

Another unreleased Hamawy internal from early April put him in a distant fourth: Reynolds-Jackson 16, Altman 12, Cohen 11, Hamawy 5.

Hamawy, a doctor and the left-wing favorite who has the largest warchest of the field, is being boosted by democratic socialist and pro-Palestinian PACs. Altman is backed by the NJ Working Families Party, which she previously led before chairing Andy Kim’s Senate campaign. Cohen is running a self-funded campaign with the backing of the Middlesex County Dems, with his base centered in East Brunswick where he serves as mayor. Reynolds-Jackson is backed by the Mercer County Dems and influential Trenton institutions including much of the local black clergy.

The majority-minority but plurality-white district stretches from Trenton to Plainfield, enveloping the Princeton area and much of the suburban Route 1 corridor.
