Looking for something safe and affordable, a 1 bedroom. Grad student couple will be attending a different schools, 1 to usc and 1 to ucla. so preferable if close to equal commute. Which areas are safe?

Can anyone direct me where to go? My son and his gf are moving from SD. Both sdsu grads and now going to grad school. 1 attending usc,1 attending ucla. We are hoping to get them into cover city area. Any apartments affordable and safe in the area? T.I.A.
