I adore the opening of the 2nd piano concerto - it sounds just like a Russian Choir happily marching through the streets.

Of course, the answer varies widely, but I used to be under the impression that the final revised version or the new critical edition was the version that we should use. But some conductors feel that the original version is the correct version (Examples: Beethoven Op. 130 Quartet with the Grosse Fuge as the finale, Mahler 6 with the Scherzo before the Andante, and don’t get me started on Bruckner). And to add to the problem, sometimes the composer never stated which version he preferred. So what’s your take? Of course it depends on the piece, but please specify.

Looking at a bunch of orchestral scores, I notice that the percussion and harp sit for such long period of times in an hour long symphony for instance.

In other words, what is the most “so bad it’s actually good” classical piece?

With regard to Beethoven metronome marks, I think that Beethoven’s metronome marks are pretty reasonable. The theories that his metronome was broken or that he was too deaf or even that Maelzel was a fraudster (and don’t even get me started on the double beat theory) all simply fall apart when you consider them. They are all playable, and (with the confusing exception of the Ninth Symphony finale) definitely make sense for the music they accompany. Am I saying that every performance is Beethoven’s music is wrong? Of course not. I am simply saying that there is an explanation for Beethoven’s metronome marks.
