Tips on tracking a vocalist who prefers holding a dynamic mic when singing

Tracking a vocalist who seems to give their best emotional performances when holding a dynamic mic and potentially moving around a little bit. I am most worried about plosives, handling noise and inconsistent distance from the mic adjusting the tone of their voice. They may be down to track through a mic on a stand, I’ll just have to ask them tomorrow. In the meantime, any tips to best record this sort of vocalist? I have a decent selection of dynamic mics and outboard compressors / preamps. For dynamic mics I was thinking of setting them up with either Beyer M88, Shure SM7B or Beta 58 running to an API of Daking preamp, followed by a Distressor or 1176. If they’re open to using a mic on a stand I’m thinking of trying out a U67 or one of my old Sony condenser mics. They’re quite a dynamic singer. Any tips greatly appreciated!

How to shootout vocal mics to choose for vocalist?

I’d like to try out 2-3 mics with a vocalist I am recording soon, and want to choose a mic that best suits their voice. I’d like to setup 2-3 mics for them to perform into simultaneously so we can compare the tonality of the mics on a take of the song in order to determine which is most flattering for their voice. The trouble is, I find it difficult to place the three mics optimally for the singer, which I believe correlates to myself and the performer having a bias toward the best positioned mic, but not necessarily the best suited mic for their voice.

My instincts have landed on 3-4 mics I’d choose for this vocalist, with a huge dynamic range: a female vocalist who literally goes from nearly whisper talking to yelling as loud as they can. The mics I’m planning to shootout are: Beyerdynamic M88, SM7B, Sony ECM-377 or my U47. I plan on using either a Daking mic pre, CAPI red dot VP28, or maybe my AEA RPQ for the SM7B. Whatever the lead vocal mic/pre is will be running thru a Distressor. I’ll likely also setup a pair of SDC or ribbon stereo room mics and gate em them to open up during louder yelling parts when mixing.

I digress tho, my main question is how do you shoot out vocal mics ? 2 or 3 mics positioned as best you can on one performance or 2/3 passes thru the song to choose?

Flying Carpenter Ant Nest in Trim Above Garage Door

Someone pointed out a pretty large number of flying carpenter ants that seemed to be entering and exiting a nest located in the trim surrounding my garage door this afternoon. Today was unseasonably warm, and I was also using a smoker grill in the driveway, which may have drove them out of their nest. How bad is this? How should I get rid of them and determine damage to the garage door/prevent further ants there?

Knotweed in between driveway and foundation

Japanese knotweed popped up this spring between my driveway and foundation. Obviously this is of serious concern as it is both invasive and potentially very destructive to the foundation of my home. I have read that the best time in my region (Northeast USA) to battle knotweed is August? My concern is that it is May now and by August it will be huge and potentially cause some serious damage by then. How should I go about eliminating this to protect my foundation and begin the battle with knotweed?

Beyerdynamic M88

I recently got one of the black Beyerdynamic M88 - TG’s — the first time I used it was for kick in during a session. I have since tried used it on guitar cab and vocals and I was sort of underwhelmed by its famed low end proximity response. It doesn’t sound like thin or audibly broken but I am wondering if perhaps this is a symptom of using it for kick in, pretty close to the beater. I have since read that beyer recommends using a pop filter on it when recording kick, which I didn’t do. What are some symptoms of an M88 being damaged after it being used for kick drum?

Rackmount for M1 Mac Studio

Looking to place my M1 Mac Studio in a 19” rack — I’m familiar with the sonnet line but they’re quite a bit out of my budget. I’m looking for something that has a similar form factor with a button on the front that mechanically presses the rear power button much like the sonnet. I’m open to 3D printed products or zip tying it to a normal rack shelf, as long as it’s secure - but I really don’t want to have it rear facing to towards the front of my mac because I use all the rear connections already and would like to be able to also easily access the front connections

The XLR male connector on one of my SM58’s broke and is structurally damaged and requires replacement.

What is a general part number to order either at my local electronics shop / online from mouser or digikey? I imagine that a generic replacement connector from neutrik or switchcraft etc could be less expensive than some Shure OEM part, I just want to make sure it is the correct size. Thanks!
