• Marvin Gaye's first Top 10 hit, Pride and Joy, was in 1963. He reached the Top 10 fourteen more times over the next ten years, including I Heard It Through the Grapevine which spent 7 weeks at #1. Some of his hits were duets with Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston, or Mary Wells (and later with Diana Ross). His sixteenth Top 10 hit, Let's Get It On, would be his second #1. Co-written with his producer Ed Townsend, the earliest version was a more political song, but those parts were revised out as Gaye and Townsend wanted the song to focus on love and sexual liberation. It would later be ranked #5 on a list published by Billboard of the 60 sexiest songs of all time. The album of the same title included a track Keep Gettin' It On which was essentially a reprise. There would be some controversy when in 2016, the family of Ed Townsend (who had died in 2003) sued Ed Sheeran for plagiarism in his song Thinking Out Loud; a jury found in favor of Sheeran. We've been trying to hold back this song for so long, and now the voters are saying stop beatin' 'round the bush and eliminate this song.

• Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong are two names we've seen before. They were a songwriting duo for Motown, particularly The Temptations, including their #1 hits I Can't Get Next to You, Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me), and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, as well as many of their lesser hits. One of their compositions, War, was a Vietnam War protest song that appeared on The Temptations' album Psychedelic Shack, but Whitfield decided against releasing it and instead called on Edwin Starr, who had one other top 10 hit (Twenty-Five Miles, #6 in 1968). Starr's version was more intense and has a James Brown-esque shout, and after spending three weeks at #1 it is now considered a contender for the most successful protest song in pop music history. It has since been covered by numerous artists including Bruce Springsteen and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. War may be good for absolutely nothing but this song won't be fighting any more wars in this game.

• Rod Stewart considered himself to be primarily a member of and lead singer of Faces, with his solo efforts being secondary. This more or less held up through his first two solo albums, but his third solo album, Every Picture Tells a Story, turned out to be more hugely successful than anyone expected, launching his solo career into high gear and putting a strain on his relationship with the rest of the band, which he eventually left. The lead single from that album was Reason to Believe, but before long, DJs were flipping it over and playing the B-side, Maggie May, which became the much bigger hit, spending five weeks at #1. Not a bad start for a solo career that would eventually include two more songs that spent multiple weeks in the #1 spot. Rod claims the first woman he had sex with was an older woman, and the song was about the mixed emotions that arose from that experience. Now it's time for this song to collect its books and get on back to school, for it is now being eliminated.

• Patrick Simmons recalls coming up with a guitar lick while The Doobie Brothers were recording their third album, The Captain and Me, but it was incomplete. Simmons gradually developed it into a song in the coming months, incorporating elements of Delta Blues, New Orleans streetcars, and the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. With an a capella section added for good measure, Black Water appeared on their fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. It was originally released as the B-side of Another Park, Another Sunday, which only made it to #32, but seeing how many DJs turned it over, they decided to release it as an A-side, and it became their first #1 hit. If it rains, we don't care, just take that streetcar uptown as we bid this song farewell from the game.

Are there any stereo or audio equipment dealers in Central Illinois that have a setup where you can listen to a variety of speakers they have for sale and choose which set of speakers sounds the best to your ears? This used to be a standard in stereo/electronics stores, even ones that also dealt in other merchandise. The best ones even ran the speakers through loudness adjustment so they played at the same volume in order to negate the perception that louder speakers sound better.

I'm looking for a decent selection of mid-to-high end audio equipment for a home system. It's okay if they also sell lower end equipment or super-high end audiophile or professional level equipment, but those are not what I'm in the market for.

Blo/No would be closest but I don't mind driving to Peoria, C/U, or Springfield, and would consider Chicago area.

I bought my stereo in 1978 from Apple Tree Stereo in downtown Normal (they had several other locations throughout Central Illinois). There were other good dealers in town, but stereo dealers like that all disappeared decades ago. Even the local Best Buy had such a listening setup 20 years ago but they don't anymore.

• Hoyt Axton was trying to pitch a melody he'd come up with to his record company. He made up random silly lyrics, expecting to later write real lyrics to go with the melody. Three Dog Night heard the song and debated whether to record it, deciding in the end that their album in development, Naturally, needed something silly to offset the other tracks, and chose to stick with Axton's offhand lyrics with only minor revisions, such as changing 'Jeremiah was a prophet' to 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog'. Thus are the origins of Joy to the World, which became the second of three of their songs to reach #1. Since then the song has been covered by multiple artists and has become a fixture in popular culture, sometimes as a crossover with the Christmas carol Joy to the World. Jeremiah may have had some mighty fine wine, but all the boys and girls and the fishes in the deep blue sea have decided to eliminate this song.

Full disclosure: Technically, last round was tied between two songs. Due to suspicion of vote manipulation for one of the songs, I made a judgment call to eliminate the other one (with concurrence from the mods). I believe that most participants are nominating and voting in good faith, and you are welcome to call out any suspicious voting behavior.

NOTICE: After carefully reviewing events since the start of Round 101 and discussing with the subreddit mods, I have made the decision to void Round 101 and restart it. I think it's important for everyone observing and participating in Last Song Standing to have confidence in the fairness of the outcome of each round. A situation arose where either addressing it or failing to do so would have raised doubts about the legitimacy of the round; a no-win situation, so to speak. Thus I felt that the best course of action was to reset the round. Please be fair in your voting. I really don't want to have to do this again.

• Let's start with the psychedelic soul group The Undisputed Truth. Their only Top 40 hit was the 1971 #3 song Smiling Faces Sometimes, written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield. It had been recorded earlier that year by The Temptations and appeared on their album Sky's the Limit but wasn't released as a single. The following year, it happened again with another Strong and Whitfield penned song, but in the opposite order. Papa Was a Rollin' Stone was first released by The Undisputed Truth and peaked at #63, then a few months later The Temptations released their version of the song and it went to #1. Norman Whitfield was also the producer of both versions of both songs, and his approach led to some disputes with The Temptations; Whitfield had incorporated some carefully crafted and sometimes lengthy instrumental breaks in the song, whereas The Temptations were displeased by how much of the song's running time they took up. They would eventually fire Whitfield as their producer. The third of September may have been the day their daddy died, which puts us a few days early for when this song is dying in LSS.

I have a question about Blizzard flavors. Once upon a time I was told that DQ has a much longer list of Blizzards they can make for you on request than the 20 or so they can fit on the menu. The only condition is that they have to be able to make it from ingredients in house. That flavor of the month from 15 years ago? If it requires an ingredient that they don't stock anymore, you're out of luck, but if the necessary ingredients are still used for sundaes or other Blizzard flavors or whatever, you can still order that Blizzard.

• Johnny Nash wasn't new to the music scene. His first hit, A Very Special Love, was released in 1957 and peaked at #23. He released a number of songs over the next 15 years with mixed results, the most successful being his #5 hit Hold Me Tight in 1968. Nash, originally from Houston, Texas, moved to Jamaica in 1965, and soon after he began incorporating reggae into his music. This is evident in his biggest hit I Can See Clearly Now. Although Nash wrote the song, the album by the same title includes songs written or co-written by Bob Marley, such as a cover of Marley's Stir It Up, which Nash released as a follow-up single and went to #12. I Can See Clearly Now was was itself covered more than 20 years later by Jimmy Cliff and used in the 1993 film Cool Runnings. Now it's gonna be a bright, bright sunshiney day for the voters who have chosen to eliminate this song.

• When Bachman-Turner Overdrive were in the studio working on their third album, Not Fragile, they developed an instrumental work track that they used for setting the microphones and amplifiers. Randy Bachman came up with some words and recorded a single take with a stutter, intending to send them to his brother Gary, who had a stutter, as a joke. Later as they were finishing up the album, the record company said it needed one more track. Reluctantly they played the work track, which they had never intended to include on the album, and they told them this one was the hit. Randy tried re-recording the lead vocal without the stutter, but it sounded too plain, and in the end they decided to keep it. That is how You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet came to be. It was not only their only #1 hit, it was also their only Top 10 hit. Let It Ride peaked at #23, Takin' Care of Business at #12, Roll on Down the Highway at #14, and Hey You at #21. Now the song is being eliminated. We had it coming to us, but the voters wanted it that way.

I have long argued that if a girl is sometimes shown sprouting cat ears, that does not mean she is actually a catgirl. It is simply a visual metaphor used to show interest or curiosity about something. It's a fairly common trope used in anime. A couple of the most famous examples are Komi (Komi Can't Communicate) and Maomao (The Apothecary Diaries).

Recently I watched the series Acchi Kocchi, and noted that with one character, Tsumiki Miniwa, this visual metaphor was used so extensively that it made me stop and wonder if she could actually be a catgirl. There is nothing else about the show to suggest catgirls exist in this setting. All of the characters are normal humans, and we occasionally see ordinary cats, but otherwise it's just a gag comedy without any aliens, anthropomorphic species, or any type of fantasy/monster species such as beastfolk. Despite this, with Tsumiki the cat ears visual metaphor is used so much that it made me stop and think.

• All three members of America were sons of American military personnel who went to school in England, met in London, and formed the soft rock trio that would go on to have seven Top 10 hits including two #1s. The second of these was Sister Golden Hair, a song said to have been inspired by Jackson Browne, about a man who believes he has found the love of his life but is struggling with whether to commit by marrying her. In 1982 they appeared in four songs on the soundtrack of The Last Unicorn. Do we love this song just a little, just enough to show we care? Well, we tried to fake it, but don't mind saying, we just can't keep it.

Please read: Last round there was some discussion about people nominating too many songs, so this round and going forward I'll ask nicely for each person to please nominate no more than three songs each round. Any likely condender for elimination is going to get nominated by someone anyway, and this will insure more people get a chance to submit nominations. Somewhere around 15-20 songs remaining, about the time every remaining song gets nominated every round, I'll switch to nominating all of them myself. This was done in the 1980s US edition and it worked well.

• During Motown's heydey in the 1960s, a number of all-male groups rose to fame and topped the charts, such as The Temptations, The Miracles (sometimes with Smokey Robinson) and The Four Tops. A similar group that was less successful during those years was The O'Jays, who charted ten songs in the Hot 100 between 1963 and 1970 but none of them made it to the Top 40. Their luck changed in 1972 with the song Back Stabbers which reached #3, followed a few months later by Love Train, which went to #1. They would go on to have four more Top 10 hits, including For the Love of Money and I Love Music. People all over the world are joining hands starting a love train, but now it seems this train is leaving the station.

• Bruce Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park NJ, was released in 1973, which included the song Blinded by the Light. In 1976, a cover version was released by Manfred Mann's Earth Band that went to #1 in early 1977. The song is rather dubiously known for having one of the most notable misheard lyrics. Springsteen's original version includes the line 'cut loose like a deuce', referring to a deuce coupe, a sports car, but Manfred Mann changed the line to 'revved up like a deuce', which was misheard as 'wrapped up like a douche'. Springsteen later joked that Mann turned it into a song about feminime hygiene. Manfred Mann's Earth Band charted two other covers of Bruce Springsteen songs, Spirit in the Night and For You. And now, the subreddit has tripped the merry-go-round with this very unpleasin' sneezin' and wheezin' the calliope crashed to the ground, and sent this song running in the night.

• Although American Woman was written as a collaborative effort by members of The Guess Who, stories and interpretations on the meaning of the lyrics differ. One claim is that it was an anti-war song against the Vietnam War. Another is that it was a jab at the American women that the Canadian band encountered while touring in the US. The band claims it arose from an observation that American women grew older quicker and that they preferred the Canadian women they knew back home. Despite this, the song became a #1 hit in the US, with B-side No Sugar Tonight getting enough attention to make it a double-A-side. The song was famously covered by Lenny Kravitz in 1999 for the soundtrack of the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. • By early 1969, The Beatles knew they were on the verge of breaking up, but they weren't happy with the album they had just recorded, so they regrouped with the intention to hit one more album out of the park. The result was Abbey Road, now regarded as their second-best album (after Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band). As for that album they weren't as happy with, the record company wasn't about to sit on a whole album knowing Beatle fans would eat it up regardless. John Lennon and George Harrison enlisted the help of producer Phil Spector to finalize the album, by then titled Let It Be, but his efforts included adding orchestral arrangements to three of the songs, a move Paul McCartney disliked, especially The Long and Winding Road. Nevertheless, it became the third single to be released from the album and the second to go to #1 in the US. A road that leads to your door, one we've seen before that will never disappear, but the time has come for this song to disappear from this game.

The tie has been broken, and we have our next eliminee:

• Mama Told Me (Not to Come) was written by Randy Newman for Eric Burdon & The Animals, who recorded the earliest version in 1966 for a possible single release that didn't happen, but the song was still included on their 1967 album Eric Is Here. Newman later recorded it for his 1970 album 12 Songs, the same year it was recorded by Three Dog Night. Their version would be the first of three of their hits to reach #1. The vocal style by Cory Wells reflects well the vibe of a young man who attends his first wild party and is not prepared for what he sees. Some speculate that the 'sugar' and 'tea' mentioned in the lyrics were veiled references to drugs, in addition to the potential double entendre in the title. We've seen so many things we ain't never seen before, but the voters have said they don't want to see this song no more.
