Too high?

Too high?

Wife thinks it’s too low coz she won’t be able to see it from the kitchen if someone is sitting on the couch.

I said it is too high looking from the couch.
People in the kitchen should be watching the gas burner not tv! 🙄

Now, i need to cook lunch myself. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Does muting a TV directly also mute outbound audio ports?

Like the title says, I'm trying to find an answer to whether muting a TV itself will also mute the outbound audio ports like HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, RCA, aux. Does the port used and the brand/model of TV matter? Is there any consistency here or is it pretty variable across different configurations?

Also if the answer is it depends on the TV/port, any ideas of how to test a bunch of TVs without having to buy them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yamaha or Marantz?

Hi hi. I'm not too too knowledgeable on this topic at all so I figured I'd ask. I have the option to switch out my Yamaha HTR4067 to a Marantz SR5004.

Will I notice any difference with the room correction on the Marantz? Seeing as the Yamaha I currently use doesn't have the YPAO mic I cant use the room correction on it.

The Marantz is available for about a hundred bucks. Should I?

How to get proper surround? Phillips oled 769 with Harman Kardon 135 avr

I'm using the TVs optical out to the avr but currently no matter which mode I try it doesn't work correctly. I tried a 5.1 test and the surround left was played in both the front left and surround left. When I tried the test mode the sound was played correctly everywhere. Is it even possible to send surround through the TVs optical to the avr? Thanks for any help!

Sense check - what would you do?

Always been my dream to have a fully dedicated cinema room, now coming close to a reality - but its daunting with so much information and want to get it right.

I have put in what I have been thinking to make the most of the room.

I am happy to board up the back door but definitely want to keep the working fireplace, along with the window (will update the blinds to be full blackout). The room is pretty dark throughout the day already, and would be even more so without the back door. Also happy to get rid of the cabinets at the front so that could just about get a side speaker at ear level instead. The beams on the ceiling are not structural but I do also like them.

Question 1 - Is this layout optimal?

Question 2 - I am thinking go all out with a 7.2.2 system, what would you recommend for this? Intrigued on budget, how far would £5k go for this?

Question 3 - TV and TV size. In this layout the seating is 3m(9.9ft) back, I want this for movies so do want a Sony but the largest available is the 77" A95L. Is it worth going up to a LG G5/6 83"?

Question 4 - Any suggestions on room treatment to make the most out of the sound system?

Planning basement setup

Any thoughts on speaker placement for this new basement setup? I have an existing 5.1 system that I will move down here and upgrade as I go. Here's the rough idea that I am thinking for tv placement. The tv would be new, so open to resizing too. The two columns are getting in my way. Thanks!

McIntosh RS250 Problems?

Anyone have experience with this for a home theater setup? I was looking for a sound setup and decided to hook up this RS250 my family wasn't using. It fills the room very well but it feels like it's just so overwhelmingly warm sounding that it's not good for anything but music. I've played with the EQ, turned the bass down completely, and still can't find a nice spot where dialogue doesn't come through slightly washed out. All I see online is praise for this unit but it's leaving me disappointed.

Denon x1700h doesn't change from stereo to surround automatically

Hey all. I just got my first surround setup. I find that I have to constantly change between surround mode and 2ch stereo manually when going from movies with surround to like music on YouTube. Is this normal?

Using denon x1700h

Google streamer

I think I read it's because the denon can't determine the audio format from the Google streamer because it's not bitstream? What is everyone using for bitstream?

Moving Heavy Amps / Stairs

Reddit does not have "flair" that says, "Are you sure you want this public" but here goes.

At 60+ years old I am dreading hauling the 70+ pound 7 channel NAD amp and other big equipment up my current stairs to move from one house to another location across town.

I don't feel like using 80 feet of bubble wrap and cardboard boxes.

I have considered a light duty dolly, but the Misses might not like that on the new carpet.

And I don't really trust movers either.

Anyone have any slick tricks or sage counsel on moving the heavy amps n stuff up a flight of stairs?

Thanks in advance.

Finally got my home theater setup done and I get why people complain about UST projectors now

Finally got my little home theater setup to a point where I can stop moving things around every night.

I knew ultra short throw projectors were picky, but I didn’t realize how picky until I actually had one sitting in my living room.

Choosing the projector was honestly the easy part. Same with the speakers. You read reviews, compare specs, figure out what fits your room, and convince yourself you made a smart decision

The annoying part is everything after that.

The projector has to sit in this weirdly exact spot. Move it a tiny bit and suddenly one corner looks off, or the image is slightly too high, or the screen edge doesn’t line up anymore. Then you start messing with alignment, which somehow makes one thing better and another thing worse.

I also didn’t expect the console to matter this much. I used to think a media console was just there to hold stuff and hide cables. With a UST projector, it basically becomes part of the setup. Height, depth, distance from the wall, all of it matters.

The speakers were another rabbit hole. I wanted them to sound good, but I also didn’t want the whole front wall to look like an electronics aisle. There’s this annoying balance between making it sound right and making the room still feel like a living room.

It finally feels pretty dialed in now, but I completely understand why people say UST setups are simple in theory and fussy in real life.

Anyone else spend way too much time fixing tiny alignment issues after thinking they were “done”?

Soon to be home owner. How to start jumping in?

Finally getting a house, and the downstairs area has a very nice area for a theater to be installed.

I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but when it comes to this type of thing, I’m pretty clueless. Would love some advice on where to start and what’s required.

Currently looking to do it without coming close to breaking the bank. I know it’ll be a large TV to start and in the center of the wall more or less.

I’ve done little bit of looking around. I’m thinking bookshelf speakers mounted on the wall would likely be the easiest for the area. Would a 3 Chanel (front left, center, and right) be a good place to start? Is that 2 speakers and a center speaker? 2 on the walls at ear level, 1 right under the TV?

Outside of that what else is recommended? Not looking for anything super fancy. Just wanting to set something up where my fiancé and I can watch movies and shows together with good quality audio and visual.

Happy to take any advice and/or suggestions. While I don’t know the exact size of the room. It’s a bit smaller, rectangular shaped, downstairs in the basement where a theater type system the main attraction. Thank you for any help!

In-wall Center and Acoustic Screen Install: Also a reminder to measure twice!

I am almost done with my theater build and this was basically the last big step I had left. I had a 120" screen that I wasn't happy with, it had lines in it from shipping, and just never smoothed out, most people couldn't see it, but I could. I also didnt like having the center low below the screen, so I saved some funds to get myself an acoustic screen with a center speaker to go behind it that is ear level with my Left and Right channels.

I am running Polk in this setup and scored a Polk 255c-LS and paired it with a Silver Ticket WAB screen. So far both have been great! The install was easy, and yes I kept in the video my oops, I mismeasured where my studs were since I couldn't find them with the stud finder since my walls have wood paneling on them, quick little fix.

I will make an official post about this project, it's taken a few months to get here but I am happy with the results.

For those with a surround system, do all your speakers match?

Trying to decide on a new surround system but wondering if I can have different surrounds than the front. Having a hard time finding a brand that has a complete system I like since I don’t want rear bookshelf’s (looking at some wall ones instead).

First set of speakers, Ascends 2ex v2

Never had dedicated speakers before. It’s a small start, but later this year I’ll get a sub and center. Big upgrade from the TV speakers. I’m not entirely happy with the location of everything, but I just had major surgery so I can’t do that much lifting.

Monoprice in-walls with no mounting tabs. Ideas?

I acquired a pair of in wall speakers that are missing every single one of their mounting tabs somehow. I haven’t been able to find spare parts on the manufacturer website, which I’m not shocked by. What would you do with these? Is there a way to get parts? A DIY way to get them in the wall anyways? Or am I shit out of luck?

Should I take my AVR outside and shoot it?

Obvious hyperbole in the title.

I finally got all my theater equipment.

AVR: Denon X3800H (Best Buy open box)
Front L/R: Klipsch RP-8400 F II
Center: Klipsch RP-504 C II
Subs: SVS PB-2000 Pro (2x)
Amp: Emotiva BasX A2+
4 ceilings speakers and 4 wall speakers

Except the AVR, everything is brand new.

Everything carefully wired with 12 ga OFC cables and banana plugs etc

Went through the Audessey calibration and have a high pitch wine coming from all the speakers.

Things I have tried:
- All power cables away from audio cables and plugged into the same power strip
- Lowering sub volume
- Amp powers front left/right or amp powers back ceiling
- Unplug everything except one speaker - whatever is plugged in wines
- Checked all cables/plugs for anything loose
- Unplugged all video inputs/outputs
- Taking a deep breath, having a couple beers, going to bed, and trying again in the morning after a full AVR reset.

The whine only stops when the AVR is off. If it is on, whatever is plugged in is wining. With or without the amp being involved.

I’ve gone through the troubleshooting circle jerk with ChatGPT and watched a dozen videos. Am I missing something? I’m about to go crazy

Is my “brand new open box” AVR from Best Buy the problem?

It is worth noting that my knowledge about home theater equipment is limited entirely to the feedback on my previous post and the hours of troubleshooting I’ve gone through in attempt to solve this.

Subwoofer

We have just bought a new house and my wife is wanting the subwoofer as hidden as possible in the from room.

Where is the best placement so that we can have both the sound quality from the sub, and it being out of sight?

For reference our TV is mounted on the chimney breast wall - thanks in advance!!
