Hello all. I’m putting together a fantasy football league for members of this sub to join. It’s free to play and there are no prizes other than bragging rights. This will just be a forum for folks who like the game and this community. It will be a 12-team league.

If you’re experienced with playing fantasy football already, it will be PPR format with all of ESPN’s default scoring and rules. The only exception is I lowered the votes needed to veto trades. I’ll send a scheduling poll for the draft once the league is filled.

If you’re inexperienced but are interested to try, you are more than welcome to join. While the fantasy season does last several months, week-to-week, the minimum time needed to participate is just a few minutes, is completely dependent on your level of interest, and the amount you put in does not directly correlate to success as there is a good deal of luck involved. The draft at the beginning is the biggest time commitment, and you can also let computers assist if you don’t have that time.

What is expected is sustained participation throughout the season so that other users aren’t just facing empty uniforms each week. Additionally, if you are new, taking initiative to learn basics will be helpful. There are tons of resources out there to help orient you, and other members of the league will be happy to answer specific questions, but it’s a little difficult to explain from scratch how everything works over text. We could even create a Discord for the league if desired.

The assigned reading chapters this past week included Deuteronomy 7, where among other things, the Lord commands the people to “utterly destroy” the inhabitants of Canaan. The instructions outlined go beyond a military victory and amount to genocide. This is not a one-off aside, because elsewhere in the Old Testament, prophets and leaders lament that the people didn’t actually follow through with the command and attribute that to their political and spiritual problems.

I think there is a growing view about the Books of Moses being written much later and were meant to be a foundational myth or origin story for Israel. But we also still have many, perhaps more, in our religion who view the scriptures as a faithful attempt to tell events as they happened. So, what is the faithful understanding of Deuteronomy 7?

> 2 And when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

> 3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

> 4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

> 5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

> 6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

> 16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
