Be my friend or give me career advice here ;)

I’m 23F, moving to Limburg at the end of this year from America to live with my boyfriend. Obviously, as this is a big move I have my worries and concerns especially since I’m not moving to the randstad as people typically tend to, so I’ll have a much smaller “fellow-immigrant” pool to work out of as it is.

First and foremost, making friends… I’ve been in Netherlands countless times already and am aware of how nice, yet reserved the Dutch can be. I have a disability (I’m deaf, currently transitioning to cochlear implants) so I may ask people to repeat things sometimes which may be annoying to people. People in the states are usually nice about it, but I’m not sure how receptive Dutch people will be?

I have every intention of putting myself out there. I’d like to take pottery and baking classes, as well as join a rollerblading group to meet people to skate around with. I also love board games and going to board game cafes, as well as craft cocktail bars and trying new drinks.

I also really enjoy watching k-dramas, various films, and recently got into collecting steelbooks!

I’m just worried that despite my efforts to put myself out there, I’m going to get cold shouldered or not really considered because of my disability. Do I actually have something to worry about or am I just getting into my head about things?

Additionally, I’m wondering about my career prospects as well. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in IT, and will be obtaining several certifications by the end of this year (PL-300, PSM I, & DP-900), hoping to launch a career into Data Analytics. I actually really hope to be a Logistics Analyst.

Does anyone have any idea what it’s like in Limburg getting a job in this field? I’m aware that it’s incredibly tough in the randstad area but is it any easier in Limburg?

Edit: I am actively learning Dutch and sit somewhere between A1-A2. I am aware Limburg speaks less English than the rest of NL and am doing my best to pick up as much of the language as I can :)

When were you activated?

I’m curious about how long after surgery you were activated. I’m a little over 1 week post op, but am not going to be activated for another 4 ish weeks, meaning 5 weeks post op. In all of my surgery notes, my surgeon stated that he has his patients wait 6-8 weeks after operation to be activated, with 8 being the standard. When I was told I’d only have to wait 5 I was delighted lol.

But as I’m healing, I couldn’t imagine only being activated 1 week post op? I still have some swelling, and my head is tender to the touch. I imagine that having a magnet on it would only be painful.

So I’m curious about other’s experiences. How soon after operation were you activated? Do you feel as if it was too soon, or that you could’ve done it sooner?

Can mild apnea still result in severe symptoms?

Was diagnosed with sleep apnea. When I picked up my APAP, to my surprise, I was informed that my AHI was only 8 and that I only have mild apnea.

But prior to treatment, I had all the bad symptoms of apnea. Loud snoring, morning headaches, depression, brain fog, inattentive, poor memory. Even my speech was messed up I would say sentences entirely backwards.

Night one of treatment, I was able to sleep all throughout the night with an AHI of 0.7.

Night two, I had an AHI of 0.1. Are these great results? I even had a major surgery that day on my skull so having an AHI like that was shocking.

Yet, I’m starting to worry that treating the apnea won’t make a change in all of my other symptoms. Since it’s so mild, were those problems even caused by the apnea? Could it be something else entirely?

Advanced Bionics Experiences

Maybe this is a belated post, but I’m getting implanted with advanced bionics tomorrow morning.

I was curious about current user’s experience! I try not to compare myself to others too much because comparison is the thief of joy lol, but I can’t help but be curious about the possibilities.

I just have a few questions:

  1. What has your experience with music been like? How long did it take to reach a tolerable level of quality?

  2. How long did it take you to understand speech?

  3. Has the T-mic truly made a difference in sound for you?

  4. Are you able to hear everything in it’s entirety, or are sounds suppressed to highlight speech?

Thank you so much for answering! :) It would give me a huge peace of mind.

Advanced Bionics T-Mic

Hi all, I’m getting implanted in less than two weeks!! 🥳 The T-mic is one of the biggest reasons I chose to go with advanced bionics. I spoke with a rep and chose all of my accessories, color, etc. But I’ve only realized just now that the T-mic wasn’t mentioned at all and I forgot to bring it up myself.

So, I’m curious. Is the T-mic an accessory you receive with the processor, or is it something that you purchase on your own later on?

Maybe it’s because there’s a shortage of them, that they aren’t really promoting it… but I would really like to have one!!!

Medicare and Wrong SSDI payment?

I’ve been receiving SSDI since I was a child. I am now an adult. About 2 years ago, I received a letter saying that the state will no longer be paying my medicare part b premiums. I called and requested to cancel the health insurance as I was insured under my mother. They said it would not be possible to do over the phone, that I’d either have to mail in or drop off a form to a local office.

I don’t live very close to an office and post office is a bit away too so I was never able to get around to submitting the form, and my monthly payments were garnished as a result of that.

Since I was paying medicare all this time - yet never using it, around a month or two ago I decided to request a physical copy of the card so I could use the insurance for upcoming medical expenses. It took about 4-5 weeks for delivery, no issue.

The issue arises when I became bombarded with a bunch of letters from social security.

One said that they received my request for cancelling Medicare Part B (never submitted the form), and that I’ll no longer be safe paying premiums.

Another said that the state would be paying for my premiums, and that I wouldn’t have to pay for them.

Another said that the state would no longer be paying for my premiums, that I would have to pay for them (dated for now, but referring to the 2024 change)

Another said I owe a premium for 2024, and subsequently my monthly payments was garnished for 2x Medicare premiums which hit quite hard this month.

My tax return was also garnished for an alleged over payment.

The cherry on top of all of this is that the medicare card they gave me doesn’t even cover Part B. Only part A. Why would they tell me they can’t cancel the insurance over the phone, only to magically be able to cancel it once i intend to use the insurance?

I feel very suckered as I’ve been paying for it all this time but was quite literally never allowed to use it.

Is there any chance for a refund for the premiums? I’m a bit lost and would appreciate some advice. I don’t even know what to say to the social security employee as all of these papers are all over the place, and I don’t want to get screwed over more by their mishaps.
