What impact does pre-release DCKO have on MCOC and Kabam in the short term?
Now that content creators are previewing DCKO, my immediate feeling is to pull back any spending on MCOC and I can’t be the only one. I’m not a whale but I do spend more than I probably intend. The idea of starting fresh without the bloat of a decade-plus old game is very appealing. Additionally, the grass is greener with DCKO as I don’t actually have my hands on it.
The first test will be the upcoming Revenge event, which will probably be a good indicator of what the Black Friday sale and banquet event spending will be like.
I honestly don’t know what Kabam should do strategically. They need to stop the bleeding of the repeated own-goals they’ve had recently. More broadly, the game needs some fundamental rework if it wants to compete for another 10 years. If they lay out a big investment, it will take time to actually improve the game experience. Beyond that, it might only maintain a revenue stream longer rather than grow it. I’m not sure if I’m a Kabam executive if I want to invest in “saving” this game or if I should be building something new.
All of the above paragraph only reinforces my inclination to stop MCOC spending at least until the smoke clears a bit. If a good portion of the MCOC player base does the same over the next year, Kabam’s revenue is going to get crushed and it may further exacerbate the situation.
I don’t really have any solutions… for either Kabam or the player base, but thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else is thinking.
