Found what I think is a nestling?
Hello friends!
Location is an apartment patio in Brooklyn three stories up.
There has been a pigeon and its nest living on our balcony. The nest is pretty well-protected behind a planter. We have seen the eggs before, but have never seen any babies until today. About an hour ago, I saw a baby on the patio alive. The mom (or dad) was standing on the bars of the patio, so not far, but the baby was sort of out in the open, and not in the nest. We watched for awhile and the mom didn’t get closer.
We googled what to do, and it said to put the baby back in the nest if it was a nestling, but leave it if it’s a fledgling. I’m almost certain it’s a nestling, so we put them back. The mom has come and gone a few times since. There was also one egg that was sort of out in the open, so I’m wondering if a predator tried to get to them? We put that back too.
Is there anything else we should do? The baby is moving and everything and we left a bottle cap of water, but not right next to them as we thought that they might get scared if we came closer to the nest again.
Sorry to not be very technical here! They are super tiny and I haven’t seen them before, only the mom, so I think they were probably born today.
Here is a pic of the little guy and thank you!
