DLSS 4.5 vs FSR 4 and Intel XESS 2 in The Witcher 3 Remastered- the gap is bigger than expected.

Judging by the linked tests, DLSS 4.5 Performance can look better than FSR 4 Quality.

With these kinds of tests - tests that contain a movable image slider between both versions - it's easy to see how impressive DLSS 4.5 can be compared to technologies like FSR 4 and Intel XESS 2.

Implementation matters obviously, but in my opinion - atleast in The Witcher 3 - DLSS 4.5 looks like it's five years ahead and it's the only technology I'd actually use without feeling like I miss out on something. The other two simply soap up the image quality too much.

Can we get rid of having to cancel every animation with dodge rolls?

I'm providing a video from Dreamcore I saw on Youtube as an example. It's not really related much as a whole, but the first minute portrays what I mean by the title pretty well.

My playstyle often looks like this too, especially when I'm playing melee. Animation cancelling almost everything with a dodge roll is the optimal way to play and it sucks. It just feels a bit wonky to play and looks jarring. I thought the issue would be less apparent with swords, but it's definitely still there and it's noticeable on almost all the gameplays I've seen so far.

Melee skill animations especially are too long overall and it should be possible to instantly go from an attack to moving without having to endure the final part of animation that can be cancelled with a dodge roll and doesn't really provide any value other than looking good. When a skill has already dealt its damage, its function is complete and it would feel better to let the player move instantly. Or use another attack. Without having to dodge roll.

Also dodge rolling shouldn't even be necessary to sprint. It's the most jarring part to me. In no other game do players have to roll 20 times per minute for basically no reason. Campaign speedruns especially look AWFUL compared to other ARPGs like Diablo. Roll into sprint into roll into sprint, over and over again.

Also sprinting shouldn't have a stopping animation that has to be animation cancelled with a dodge roll or skill. Why isn't a simple transition from sprinting to walking even possible in this game??? My character is able to singlehandely defeat ancient demigods, but has to stop his sprint before walking?

I just think that the current state of movement is too not-fluent to be worthy of the 1.0 version and I hope there will be some big improvements.

ADC rune variety seems very low with Lethal Tempo being the root cause?

Around 2/3rd of the ADC roster (mages and assassins not included) are mainly going Lethal Tempo, even champions that in theory should have better runes:

Examples:

  1. Tristana: already has massive attack speed steroids in her kit and yet Lethal Tempo still feels like it outclasses other runes on her, despite diminishing returns. Even Press the Attack, which feels like it should be amazing. E -> 3 autoattacks -> Press the Attack procs -> Bomb explodes with higher damage. But the 8% higher damage it provides afterwards can hardly compete with 30% higher attack speed and extra projectiles on top of it that Lethal Tempo gives, atleast in the first 20 minutes of the game.
  2. Draven: even though he doesn't care about attack speed and has high AD scallings, Lethal Tempo is still his best rune, because it allows him to skip building attack speed at all in his build. And Conqueror just takes way too long to stack. By the time it's stacked, ADCs with Lethal Tempo would have already thrown out 5 free autoattacks and gotten way more value.
  3. Ezreal- similar to Tristana. He already has massive AS boosts from his passive, which means diminishing returns from more attack speed, but Lethal Tempo is still the best on him. Except in Ezreal's case it's even weirder, because Ezreal's spells don't benefit from Lethal Tempo at all and his autoattacks are relatively weak. Conqueror and Press the Attack should just be way better in theory.

The only ADCs that don't go Lethal Tempo are those that are very unique or straight up can't auto-attack fast. Smolder, Jhin, Corki, Nilah, Senna. Also MF and Lucian despite not being that unique, but Press the Attack just fits too well into their trading patterns.

I just feel like if less than ~6 champions in the entire game are happy going Press the Attack, then perhaps it deserves to get buffed? It just seems to me that it cannot compete with Lethal Tempo at the moment. Conqueror on ranged champs feels underwhelming too. Who even builds it anymore? I think it's only Samira, Corki and Nilah, and the last one isn't even ranged tbh.

Press the Attack atleast used to have the supporting component to it when it amped ally damage too. But now it doesn't and the choice between ADC runes usually boils down to "which rune spikes my DPS the hardest?". And it's hard to compete with 30% attack speed + projectiles that actually hurt quite a bit.

TLDR:
Give ADC runes other than Lethal Tempo some love :(

EDIT: Not diminishing returns, but linear scalling. Took a little bit of mental shortcut there.

Would you rather get a very good RTX 5070ti model or a low tier RTX 5080 for the same price?

Straight to the point, I have a chance to buy RTX 5080 Gigabyte Windforce SFF for the same price as very good RTX 5070ti versions like Gigabyte Aorus Master or MSI Gaming Trio.

My gut is telling me to go with the RTX 5080, but I'm a bit scared that the out of the box thermal/noise performance will be bad enough that I'll have to undervolt/power limit too much and it'll turn out to be a 5070ti performance-wise anyways, just more ugly and perhaps too loud regardless.

I'm playing on 1440p and probably won't touch 4k anytime soon. Also pairing it with 9800X3D.

So, which one would you rather get and why? Cheap RTX 5080 or expensive RTX 5070ti? Thanks for any answers.

EDIT:
Alright, I am convinced now. RTX 5080 it is, thanks for the replies.

EDIT2:
Bought it already, ima update and give my opinion on how well it runs in ~2 weeks.

EDIT3: Well, turns out there was a cheap 5070 Ti Gigabyte Windforce SFF on sale too, I decided to cancel my RTX 5080 order and go with it instead. I just didn't feel like RTX 5080 was worth the price difference anymore, since it was roughly 25% more expensive for 15% more performance.

It's one thing to compare the cheapest RTX 5080 to the most expensive RTX 5070ti and another, when comparing it to the cheapest 5070ti. And money does matter to me.

I know it's a bit weird buying a 5070ti after so many people suggested going with RTX 5080, but I think the end result is the same- I didn't overpay 300$ for better cooling that turns out doesn't do that much. Gonna try out a budget version for once and see how it goes.

This ascendancy node seems... bad?

Let me explain:

Gemling was always meant to be a class that can be played around basically any build. That's been made clear for example by the addition of the "Advanced Thaumaturgy" ascendancy node that adds additional quality bonuses to every single skill in the game.

There's only one problem: that node is gated by the "Virtuous Barrier" ascendancy node and Virtuous Barrier seems to heavily favour ranged characters and evasion characters, especially the mix of both, for two reasons:

  • They get hit less often, because they are ranged (duh)
  • They get hit less often, because evasion dodges hits (duh)

Now imagine that you're playing a melee character based around armour or energy shield. Getting hit over 20 times in the span of 5 seconds isn't something uncommon, especially when doing league mechanics like Ritual. That means that this node effectively grants crazy low stats for the majority of time.

Some tiny calculations based on current numbers:

It could be a good node against bosses if it wasn't for the TERRIBLE recharge times. Just to paint a clearer picture, getting enough motes (6) to equate to 15% increased defenses and 3% increased maximum life takes a whopping 12 seconds from scratch. And getting full stacks takes over 40 seconds.

Can you imagine getting hit on average less than 1 times per 2 seconds as a Mace Warrior so that you could mantain a healthy amount of Mote stacks? I certainly can't.

BONUS:

Also I ignored the fact that most builds won't make a good use of all 3 Mote types. For example, a Mace Warrior doesn't care about intelligence Motes that much and energy shield builds don't care about strength motes at all, but they are still gettable, just less often.

If the player sits around full Motes, there's a very low chance that a hit takes away an unwanted Mote and the player has to regenerate it at some point. However when sitting at 0 motes, there's a 33% chance to get the unwanted Mote, unless it's weighted somehow.

TLDR:

The "Virtuous Barrier" node seems very bad for anything that isn't a ranged or evasion build and it's not at all a build-agnostic ascendancy node like the Gemling Legionnaire is supposed to be. Hopefully I'm missing something or it gets changed for better.

EDIT:
As others mentioned, perhaps the issue is that it's level 1 and the skill is going to be much more bearable at higher levels. Regardless, ranged + evasion favouritism is not something that belongs on the Gemling Legionnaire, even if the advantage isn't big.

EDIT2:

I realize that we don't know all the details regarding quality bonuses for the Barrier skill for example. Or higher level. Or the unknown node behind Virtuous Barrier.

No matter the numbers, I don't think it's likely that any of the changes mentioned above actually make this node truly build-agnostic and not evasion-favouring. "Lose stacks on hit" feels like a core design choice here.

It would honestly be nice if at the very least the Virtuous Barrier was swapped with the quality node. Everyone picking up Gemling wants new gem qualities and not everyone wants a buff that's almost useless for characters that get hit a lot.

And yes, it's not the final version of the patch. Perhaps something changes, perhaps I'm already wrong.
