I loved most of East of Eden and gave it a 3/5 on GR. It would’ve been an easy 5-star read if not for the way Steinbeck represented his female characters. I wasn’t really a fan of how he wrote Cathy, who is, in my opinion, the most complex character in the book. There were also parts where the male characters seemed to speak as though they possessed all the wisdom in the world, as if they were somehow beyond fault. Maybe I missed the point, though. I dunno.
Anyway, can someone recommend a book that’s as gripping as East of Eden but has excellent female representation? Maybe a classic? So far, the books I’ve read that fit this category are Betty and A Thousand Splendid Suns.
Thank you and happy reading, everyone! :)
