Together with Sweden, we continue strengthening Ukraine's combat aviation

Together with Sweden, we continue strengthening Ukraine's combat aviation. Today, our countries signed an agreement for the procurement of 16 Gripen E fighter jets. Importantly, the aircraft will come with a package of related equipment, technical assistance, and support. In addition, under our previous agreements with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the first 16 Gripen C/D aircraft will be transferred to our Air Force at the beginning of 2027.

I thanked Sweden's Minister for Defense, Pål Jonson, for this support and for the cooperation during our meeting. We discussed in detail the implementation of these steps, as well as broader bilateral cooperation, including preparations for the Drone Deal and our work on anti-ballistic defense.

I thank Sweden – all the people and the Government – for the meaningful partnership and for the consistent support since the start of Russia's invasion. Together, we are working for the security of Ukraine and of all Europe.

Presenting state awards at the 32 years anniversary of the SSU’s Center of Special Operations Alpha

Today marks 32 years of the SSU’s Center of Special Operations “Alpha,” and I am grateful to you for strengthening the Center, the Security Service of Ukraine, and our entire state every year. I presented state awards to the warriors of the SSU’s Center of Special Operations “Alpha” and handed over an award to the family of a fallen Hero who was honored with this title posthumously.

Over the years of our full-scale defense, the Security Service of Ukraine has become one of the world’s strongest security services: a truly combat-capable service. And a major part of this achievement is the result of Alpha’s work.

I thank every Alpha warrior for your service! I thank everyone who supports you and helps you. I thank your families for raising such outstanding Ukrainian warriors! And we must always remember each and every one of them: all Ukrainian defenders who gave their lives in this war, defending our independence, so that Ukraine could live.

Sending the Order of the White Eagle back to the President of Poland

Yesterday, the President of Poland noted that the Order of the White Eagle is not an ordinary award. It is a symbol of the highest trust of the Republic of Poland. It signifies a special bond with the Polish state and the special gratitude of the Polish People. Such a symbol requires not only merit, but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community.

Therefore, if it is considered that this special symbol may remain with Catherine II, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schröder, then we in Ukraine will not argue with that. Ukraine is grateful to the Polish People for their support and cooperation, which play a significant role in the struggle for our and your independence from Russia.

"Ukraine never forgets solidarity and understands that cooperation between states and peoples in our region is one of the tangible security guarantees for Ukrainians and for each neighboring state.

Ukraine will continue to defend itself in this war unleashed by Russia, and we will undoubtedly achieve a dignified peace.

Ukraine is grateful to all peoples, states, and leaders who will continue to stand with us in the defense of freedom and who, together with Ukraine, will serve as guarantors of postwar peace in Europe and a new, real security.

Ukraine will remain open to all meaningful formats of engagement with Poland in order to try to avoid conflicting interpretations of the difficult and painful chapters of our shared past and to ensure proper respect for all innocent victims of the 20th century.

And Ukrainians are doing everything in our power to ensure that Europe does not suffer defeat in this century.

I am proud of our people and of EVERY Ukrainian warrior – of the millions of Ukrainian men and women who deserve unquestionable respect for the heroism the Ukrainian People have shown in defending themselves against Russian aggression.

We believed that the Order of the White Eagle, awarded in 2023, was meant for the Ukrainian People and our army. That is what was said at the time. Today, I sent the Order back to the President of Poland.

I believe the future will confirm the respect Ukrainians deserve.

Glory to Ukraine!"

King of Belgium & King of hearts ❤️

"During an audience with His Majesty King Philippe of the Belgians, I spoke about the consequences of Russian attacks against Ukraine, including the damage to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. We discussed the need to strengthen sanctions pressure on Russia, the situation on the frontline, and diplomatic work with partners.

We also spoke about Ukraine’s European integration and the development of defense cooperation. I thank Belgium for its solidarity with our people and its continued support."

Inspecting the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra damaged in last night's attack

"First responders have put out the fires in Kyiv – at the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal. I am grateful to all the services working at the sites of the strikes, and to everyone who is helping. It has been confirmed that two Russian drones deliberately targeted the part of the city where the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal are located. As of now, 35 people are reported injured in Kyiv. Across the country, 53 people have been wounded, and 11 people are known to have been killed in this massive Russian attack. My condolences to all their families and loved ones.

We are in constant communication with our partners regarding the consequences of this Russian attack and the necessary response. It is important that state leaders, public leaders, and international organizations do not remain silent. I have instructed Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our entire diplomatic team to maximize all contacts with partners today so that international events this week and next deliver real results for strengthening our defense and increasing global pressure on Russia over this war. We need a just response to this Russian strike. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine."

Some pictures from the Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces

"Today, for the first time, we mark the Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces, and from now on, each year, June 11 will be a day of our gratitude to the warriors of the Unmanned Systems Forces.

Modern warfare can no longer be imagined without drones, and Ukrainian unmanned systems are operating successfully at different levels: from carrying out missions on the frontline to striking important enemy facilities hundreds of kilometers deep inside its territory. All of this is being documented, and it is thanks to the precision and skill of our operators that Russia’s losses have long exceeded 30,000 killed and wounded per month.

I thank each and every person serving in the Unmanned Systems Forces, developing Ukrainian technologies, and working for the sake of our advantage on the battlefield. Thank you to everyone who is working to reduce Russia’s capabilities and strengthen our security."

June 9, Ukraine–Nordic-Baltic Summit (NB8)

1-4: "We are grateful to all the people of Estonia, President Alar Karis, and First Lady Sirje Karis for their constant and unwavering support for Ukraine and our people. Today in Tallinn, important meetings are planned with all the Nordic and Baltic countries." 5: "Ahead of the Ukraine – Nordic-Baltic Summit, I met with the Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo." 6: "I met with President of Finland Alex Stubb, and Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Store. I informed them about contacts at the leaders’ level in the E3–Ukraine format as well as our contacts with the American side. 7: "My first meeting with the new Prime Minister of Latvia, Andris Kulbergs, and an important result for our countries – we signed a Drone Deal." 8-10: "We held a meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis. Today is a special format of cooperation. I thank Estonia for organizing our work here today. The President and I discussed the key things that matter right now: clear movement in diplomacy, strengthening air defense, and support for our progress toward membership in the European Union." 11: (from joint press conference with President of Estonia) "Ukraine will continue responding to any strikes by the Russian Federation and applying its fair long-range sanctions." 12-14: "I thank Estonia and Prime Minister Kristen Michal personally for supporting Ukraine. This truly means a great deal to us. During our meeting, I presented the Prime Minister with the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, II Class." 15-16: "Europe is strongest when Europeans act together, not separately. This is what we are achieving in all our formats. On Sunday, we had the Ukraine–E3 format. Today, it is Ukraine–NB8. And we stay in regular contact with the United States. We are preparing together for the upcoming EU and NATO summits, as well as the G7 summit meetings. All of this can bring real results." 17: "During my visit to Estonia, I have the opportunity to convey sincere greetings and words of gratitude to First Lady Sirje Karis from the people of the Zhytomyr region, which Estonia is helping to rebuild." 18: "Today, five Estonian universities joined the Global Coalition of Ukrainian Studies – a global initiative for the academic study of Ukraine, which already brings together 81 institutions in 26 countries around the world." 19: "The large foster family of Anastasiia and Oleksii Melnyk from Kostiantynivka, raising eight children, has been living for a year in the Zhytomyr region in a house built under the Room for Childhood project of the Olena Zelenska Foundation in partnership with ESTDEV. Estonia became the first partner of the initiative and financed the construction of four more such homes for large foster families. ESTDEV has also supported the Voices Camps for two years – psychological recovery programs for around 100 Ukrainian children every year." 20: "I visited the Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom and launched a Ukrainian-language audio guide there." https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa https://x.com/ZelenskaUA

E3 (Great Britain, Germany, France) plus Ukraine format talks in London

1-2: "Today I am in Britain. We will have our bilateral talks with Keir and a meeting in the E3 plus Ukraine format: President of France Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer. Our teams have already done substantive work to prepare all the meetings. Now it is important to discuss everything and agree on the key things at the leaders’ level." 3-5: "I thank Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz for their support. We met in the important E3–Ukraine format. A substantive discussion focused on our defense. I informed them about the situation on the battlefield and Russia’s losses. For five consecutive months now, the aggressor has been losing more than 30,000 troops killed and wounded. It is important that our assessments align with those of our partners: Russia is not winning on the battlefield, and our mid-range strikes and deep strikes are significantly limiting its ability to expand its aggression. But it is also extremely important to have protection against ballistic threats, with which the Russians are terrorizing our cities and communities. We also discussed possible ways to reinvigorate diplomacy and Europe’s role in this process." 6-8: "Unis pour l’Ukraine." 9: "As always, a good audience with His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I thank His Majesty, the people, and the entire United Kingdom for their ironclad support for our people." 10: Larry the Downing Street Cat.

Olena Zelenska and "Mothers of Kherson" at the National Opera of Ukraine

"At the National Opera of Ukraine, excerpts from the opera Mothers of Kherson were performed publicly for the first time – a documentary work about mothers who make their way across more than 4,000 kilometers, through borders, fear, threats, and uncertainty, to bring back the children abducted by Russia. It is important that the Ukrainian audience was the first to hear this story. This fall, its full world premiere will take place in Warsaw, and later it will be staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. I am grateful to playwright George Brant, composer Maksym Kolomiiets, conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera Peter Gelb, and the entire project team. Thanks to you, the world will hear the truth about one of the most painful crimes of this war – the abduction of Ukrainian children – and about the strength of mothers who never stop fighting for their sons and daughters."

June 4, the Day of Remembrance for the Children Killed by Russia

Today is the Day of Remembrance for the Children Killed by Russia. Officially, it has a different name. But in the language of truth, this is exactly what it is. This day is about the most painful episodes of the war, about the greatest injustice and the evil Russia inflicts when the most vulnerable and the most innocent are killed. Children.

Currently, that figure is at least 707 Ukrainian children. And there are also thousands of children whom Russia has wounded, abducted, and thousands of children whose fate remains unknown. These are important and horrifying figures, but behind them lies something greater than statistics about Russian crimes alone. These were children's dreams, plans, and hopes that were simply erased. This is the pain of every mother and every father who does not know how to go on living with that. Living with such pain.

Our Ukrainian children. Some were only a few days old. Some had just started first grade. Others should have been celebrating their graduation. This is who a sick state is waging war against. This is who the so-called second army of the world is fighting – an army incapable of winning on the battlefield and seeking to assert itself by targeting children.

Eternal memory to every child who was killed. It is our enduring duty to remember, to protect our children, and to do everything possible to ensure that the evil Russia has brought is punished.

NATO’s North Atlantic Council in Kyiv, Ukraine

1-3: "We began the visit of NATO’s North Atlantic Council to Ukraine by honoring the memory of fallen Ukrainian warriors at the Wall of Remembrance, along with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Chair of the Alliance’s Military Committee Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, as well as the permanent representatives and deputy permanent representatives of all 32 NATO member states." 4-6: "Ballistic missiles are Russia’s last remaining argument in this war, and we must find sufficient countermeasures. I thank our partners and Mark Rutte that the PURL initiative exists and is functioning – contributions were made this May. There will be contributions in June as well. Today, we discussed how we can accelerate and expand deliveries under this key program. I also thank all our partners who are already working with us on joint production and helping with funding so that weapons production in Ukraine can continue to grow. We discussed with the NATO Secretary General several other things that could provide Ukraine with stronger long-term financial security guarantees. We will keep working on this at both the G7 Summit and the NATO Summit in Ankara." 7: Joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte after the meeting of the Ukraine–NATO Council in Kyiv. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDw1omwhjvc

Birthday tribute to Kyiv

Kyiv.

Some were born here, some came here to study, live, and work, and some have never been here at all – but for every Ukrainian, Kyiv is dear.

Ours. Warm. Cozy. The Kyiv we admire. The Kyiv we are proud of.

The Kyiv we all cherish together and have defended, and continue to defend – because it is our heart. A city that has always been, and will always be, at the center of history. A capital that has weathered the darkness, withstood heavy blows, and, despite everything, remains a global city of strength. And it always inspires with its vitality, resilience, and beauty.

Each of us has hundreds of moments for which we can say:

“My Kyiv, I love you!” My Kyiv, I will defend you!

For as long as you stand, Ukraine stands.

And as long as you are free, freedom flows through our veins!

I thank all Kyivans, all defenders of Ukraine, who through their courage, work, and care make our capital and all of Ukraine something we can only be proud of.

Happy Kyiv Day!

Saturday's special meeting in a very green location

"We held a special meeting on our next steps.

First – diplomacy. We are in contact almost every day with envoys of the President of the United States and our European partners. We noted how the situation with air defense supplies – and our arrangements more broadly – unfolds. We set priorities for the coming weeks: antiballistic capabilities, bilateral documents on drone production and supply – including a Drone Deal with the European Union – and preparations for meetings in several formats. We are preparing for important negotiations – for now, without public details.

Second – we must continue the humanitarian track, the exchanges that had already been agreed upon. I instructed the team to contact partners who can now help step up the necessary mediation.

Third – there will be new decisions in support of Ukraine, including for our energy sector. We are finalizing the details. Glory to Ukraine!"

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced plans to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honour, after the Ukrainian president named a military unit after a group that led massacres of ethnic Poles during World War Two.

Here the full article.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced plans to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest honour, after the Ukrainian president named a military unit after a group that led massacres of ethnic Poles during World War Two.

However, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose government regularly clashes with the opposition-aligned president, has sought to calm emotions, warning that the only one to benefit from conflict between Poland and Ukraine is Russia.

“Unfortunately, President Zelensky has shown that Ukraine, in terms of mentality – glorifying bandits, murderers from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) – is not ready to be part of the European family,” said Nawrocki on Friday morning.

“Because in the European family, you cannot glorify bandits [who] murdered women and children, murdered Poles,” he added, after announcing that he would move to strip Zelensky of the order, which was awarded to him by Nawrocki’s predecessor, Andrzej Duda, in 2023.

Nawrocki noted that a meeting of the body responsible for overseeing the order will next meet on 8 June, when he would propose discussing revoking Zelensky’s award. However, the president noted that the decision on doing so ultimately rests with him, reports the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Nawrocki’s announcement comes amid growing anger in Poland over a decree issued by Zelensky on Wednesday, in which he named an operations centre for Ukraine’s special forces after the “heroes of the UPA”. He said he had done so “in order to restore the historical traditions of the national army”.

The UPA was a partisan formation created during World War Two as part of efforts to fight for an independent Ukrainian state. However, it was also responsible for the so-called Volhynia massacres, in which around 100,000 ethnic Poles, mostly women and children, were slaughtered, often with great brutality.

The fact that the UPA and figures associated with it continue to be venerated in Ukraine has regularly caused tension with Poland. The two countries also often clash over the Volhynia massacres, which Poland regards as a genocide, a label Ukraine rejects.

Zelensky’s decision immediately triggered condemnation from Poland’s right-wing opposition, which is aligned with Nawrocki and generally favours a tougher line towards Kyiv, especially regarding historical issues.

Przemysław Czarnek, deputy leader of the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, called it “a shameful signal sent to Polish society” and “a demonstration of extreme ingratitude” towards a country that has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“One cannot speak of partnership with Poland and reconciliation one day, only to glorify the following day the formations responsible for the slaughter of thousands of Poles,” wrote Czarnek on Wednesday.

While the Polish government initially avoided commenting, on Friday morning, foreign ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór issued a statement saying that Poland views Zelensky’s decision “in an unequivocally negative light” and is “raising this issue in conversations with our partners in Ukraine”.

Naming something after the UPA “wounds the memory of this organisation’s victims”, harms dialogue between Poland and Ukraine, and “can be exploited by Russian propaganda, which seeks to divide us and undermine support for Ukraine”, added Wewiór.

Broadcaster RMF reports that Polish deputy foreign minister Marcin Bosacki submitted a formal protest to Ukrainian ambassador Vasyl Bodnar on Thursday and warned that Zelensky’s decision would anger and alienate many Poles.

Late on Friday morning, after Nawrocki – who regularly clashes with the more liberal government – had made his announcement, Tusk sought to calm the situation.

“I would expect both presidents to be able to rise above these historical emotions and try to build this difficult but necessary Polish-Ukrainian friendship and cooperation,” said Tusk, quoted by broadcaster TVN. If not, “the Kremlin will truly have reason to rejoice”.

The prime minister added, however, that Zelensky’s decision “violates our historical sensitivity”. He called for Ukrainians to show greater awareness of “what this grim legacy of the UPA means from the perspective of every Pole”.

Meanwhile, among those to criticise Zelensky was former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa, who is a strong supporter of Ukraine. He announced that he will now stop wearing a badge with a Ukrainian flag that is constantly on his chest during public appearances.

“By honouring the UPA bandits, the president of Ukraine has insulted me and all our murdered compatriots,” wrote Wałęsa on social media.

“I have therefore removed the Ukrainian flag from my chest. I will continue to help the nation in its fight against the Soviets [Russians]. I refuse to support President Zelensky!”

While tensions over World War Two history regularly erupt between Poland and Ukraine, the two countries have in recent years also made tentative steps towards reconciliation.

In 2023, Duda and Zelensky jointly commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres. Last year, Ukraine also lifted its ban on the exhumation of victims of the massacres, tens of thousands of whom are believed to remain buried in unmarked mass graves.

However, Kyiv last year also criticised Poland’s move to establish a national holiday commemorating “victims of genocide committed by the OUN-UPA”, as well as a proposed law by Nawrocki that would criminalise the promotion of ideologies associated with Second World War Ukrainian nationalist groups.

Books Arsenal - Olena in Kyiv and Volodymyr in Sweden

"The strength of Ukrainians is that, after terrible Russian attacks and clearing away the rubble, they go out to buy new books. That is why Book Arsenal once again proves today that culture also holds the country together. I am returning from there with books for myself and for our service members. And with a very clear feeling: Ukraine cannot be defeated as long as there remains such a passion for reading, a thirst for new knowledge, and a desire to think freely."

https://x.com/ZelenskaUA/status/2060057843294695590

"Today in the Swedish city of Uppsala, the President of Ukraine held important talks with the Prime Minister of Sweden. We have a new support package and strong agreements on supplying Ukraine "gripenív". And although the President could not be at the Book Arsenal himself today, his choice stopped at the books "1913: Summer of the Century" ("The Laboratory") and "Time for Dignity. Justice in an Unjust World" ("Our Format") provided by Ulf Kristersson. We invite everyone to read, support our authors and publishers and support themselves in this way. Because books really know how to do it."

"To everyone fighting for Ukraine in the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – thank you for your service to our state, for your extraordinary courage, and for the strong results you deliver every day! The Special Operations Forces have gone through all the battles of this war that were the most difficult, the most brutal, and the most important for Ukraine. Together with the Security Service of Ukraine, the Unmanned Systems Forces, our missile units, and our intelligence agencies, they also carry out missions in the area of our long-range sanctions against Russia for this war. The Special Operations Forces are also involved in the resistance in our temporarily occupied territory. Thank you for organizing such special operations, for supporting the resistance, and for creating exactly the kind of problems the occupier deserves."
