I went to the Skarmory event nearby where there were like 40-50 people. Everyone was talking in their groups and whatnot. I'd kindly walk up to people and try to spark friendly conversation and most people had close ended responses. I mainly lead the conversation to asking for a trade and I got shut down with almost every person.
I just got back to playing; I last played in 2016 so I have 200+ 2016 pokemon that I'm trying to trade.

Is trading not really a thing? Or are people just protective over their pokemon?

I haven't played since 2016 and just recently logged on a week ago trying to relearn the game. I got a bunch of 2016 pokemon and just learning about the lucky stuff.
