Revisiting the Jonah Heim plate blocking Call

Revisiting the Jonah Heim plate blocking Call

The broadcast just brought up the Heim call again so I dug it up and tried to understand it. There's a good video and rules analysis given here. To take something that's overly complicated though, and reduce it to simple ideas, I would frame it like this:

The rules are worded in a way to favor the runner, such that they can run full speed all the way to the plate. The only thing you're allowed to do to impede the runner requires you to be in possession of the baseball (or be in the act of fielding the ball). Once you have the ball you can freely slow down the runner pretty much however you want.

In the play in question, the runner was forced to veer off their full-speed path, to dodge Heim who was crossing over the base-path to field the ball. Since Heim was deemed to not be in possession of the ball (or needing to be where he was to field the ball), he was in violation.

I think it's a little unforgiving but I want to live in a world where baserunners get to run fast and the rules make injuries less likely. I'm not sure if the Heim situation was a proper application of the rules or not, and I kind of hate that there is a very gray area surrounding the act of fielding the ball where you can also block the plate even if you don't have the ball yet. It feels defense favored and creates more injuries than needed.

Carter, Lopez, and Osuna moves

What moves are we thinking for these three when Langford and Seager get back?

I think a real option is putting Wyatt in center, Osuna keeps left, and then obviously the infield shuffles for Seager at SS.

It's pretty clear Carter has looked poor at the plate. Could he be 40-man platooned or would be optioned to keep getting active play time?

What other ways are people thinking they'd like to see things get moved?

Hadestown Ticket

Hello!

I have a ticket for Hadestown at SKYPAC Thursday night. Unfortunately my mom has become sick and it's a 2 hour drive for me to Bowling Green. It's very bad timing for me to have to spend a day away from home.

The ticket is row M center orchestra which is quite good. I've called SKYPAC and I can transfer it to will call for whoever I end up giving it to (they only use physical tickets apparently).

I'd like around $35 so I can try and recoup something for it. Reply or DM me and we can work out a transfer.

Also mods I read the rules and think this post is ok but if not let me know and I'll fix it up.

Hello!

Just did a re-watch since it came out on HBO Max and think I came up with a pretty succinct way of viewing the film. I think this has mostly been stated by others but maybe not so clearly framed and possibly missing some details that I think are important.

Here's the simplistic parable version of Marty Supreme:

Marty is a boy who believes he is the most important being on the planet. He has been granted a divine purpose (to be the best Ping Pong player) and will stop at nothing until he fulfills this purpose.

Along the way he meets Rachel. Rachel falls in love with Marty and conceives a child with him. They're going to be a family.

Then Marty meets Kay Stone and Milton Rockwell. Kay is just like Marty. She has to be the best actress possible and she has discovered a source of power that lets her accomplish this: her husband.

Her husband is Milton Rockwell and for the low price of eternal unhappiness he can help you chase your dreams until the end of time. Kay has collected 25 years worth of unhappiness-trophies from him, one for each year of their marriage.

Marty, also wanting to pursue his divine purpose, seeks to bargain with Mr. Rockwell. Things don't go well for Marty as he learns at each step of the way he is being increasingly degraded and humiliated.

Ultimately Marty discovers that despite all his efforts to appease Mr. Rockwell, he won't be granted permission to compete in the Ping Pong world championship in Tokyo. Even after abandoning his family and nearly dying, the world tells him it's not enough.

Disillusioned with his supposed divine purpose(Ping Pong), he returns home to find he is the father of a child and has a partner who wants to build a life together. Seeing this, he realizes that his purpose is here, and that it's not glorious, but it is good.

Thoughts:

Basically despite her own issues, Rachel represents love and family. The Rockwells represent wealth and fame. Marty in the film is more complicated than someone who "wants to be good at ping pong" so the parable doesn't match completely, but that's what makes the movie so good. It's a parable of the value of family and the cost of pursuing your own interests while neglecting others but it is also richly woven with other issues and characters along the way.
