It's an old russian song associated with the great patriotic war.

It's about loneliness, fear, death, and quiet hope of a soldier in the front. It is a homesick ballad that contrasts the conditions of the battlefield (whistling bullets, death) with intimate thoughts of family back at home.

The youtube video description describes it as: "Dark Is the Night has been described as "a gentle lyrical song imbued with a feeling of homesickness and expressing devotion to one's beloved" which helped "reveal the personal side of army life, indiscernable in the roar of warfare". It contrasted sharply with the prevalent type of war song, which was either a field marching song or a civil patriotic one."

I've been really getting into the music of the soviet world, especially those at the near end of the soviet union or immediately after.

I recently stumbled into this 1986 protest song by the band Nautilus Pompilius, first through the Anna Efremova cover which is the OST of the short film "Beholder" 2019 by Nikita Ordinskiy.

The original is a more classic rock sound, but socially charged, with an undercurrent of anger beneath the tune. Throughout the song, it builds to the chorus which repeats "bound by a single chain, tied up by a single goal".

The cover version, sung in a breathy tone and with softer instruments, airs a more atmospheric and melancholic feel. Unlike the gritty sound of the original, this version is more of a clean cinematic score for a dystopian film.

Despite the different deliveries, the essence of the song remains the same, and i think it's what underpins the overarching protest feel of the song, aided maybe a bit of the sound russian language and our general perception of it.
