accidentally agreed to a room side with my roommate, now i’m panicking about the door layout. need advice on how to handle move-in day.

hey everyone,

i’m moving into my freshman dorm soon and i’m completely overthinking a situation with my roommate.

a few days ago, my roommate asked if he could have the left side of the room for some random reason. without thinking it through, i just said "yes" and told him i'd take the right side.

here’s the issue: i’ve never toured the building, but my parents pointed out that based on how some dorms are laid out, the left side might actually be the "door side" (where the door swings inward against the wall). i really, really don't want the door side, i wanted the side further from the entryway.

i am moving in earlier than him on move-in day. if i get there, walk into the room, and realize that the left side (the side he claimed) is actually the door side, should i just take the left side anyway?

on one hand, he claimed "the left side," but if he only picked it because he assumed it wasn't the door side, i don't want to steal the "good" side if he just guessed wrong. on the other hand, if i take the left side just to avoid the door, i'm technically taking the side he asked for, and i don't want to start the year off being a toxic roommate or making things awkward before he even unpacks.

if the left side turns out to be the door side, should i just take it since he asked for it, or should i stick to the right side like i promised? if i do end up swapping or needing to text him, how should i even phrase it without sounding crazy or rude?

appreciate any advice from people who have survived dorm move-in logistics
